Novel Coronavirus discussions

It's pretty real here regardless of anyone's personal opinion on the virus or the response to it.

The kids will be off school for at least the next 4 weeks. On the plus side, childcare won't be a problem for us now that my wife will be severely underemployed since her industry is basically shut down.

Most everybody DOES know better than to invite a raging virus into your home and do nothing to protect.
Most everybody with anything like big money and an education DOES know enough to not knowingly expose your 84 yr old mom to a serious disease.

WTF over. Off the rails dood. LOL

You're assuming the entire percentage of the population is going to contract it. Personally I think you're way over-estimating what the numbers will be and horriblizing it. ..

I'm sorry you think that. I was working from your numbers.

Best estimates from epidemiologists in the real world are that 40-70 percent of the population will be infected. I used 20 percent like your cruise ship scenario which is seems conservative but not completely ridiculous.

We are dealing with an easily transmissible disease where nobody has any immunity to it.

So I am genuinely curious. Why do you think that only a small portion of the population is going to be infected? If this is a situation where you are right and a lot of experts are wrong and we have chaotic financial markets I would think you could use that information advantageously to make yourself some major bucks. So please share what you know that everyone else does not know.

Right. Now here's the kicker. Hospitals in infection areas are overwhelmed
almost immediately and thence mortality % will be significantly higher than the situation where critical care is actually available.

Don't be sorry. I'm surely not. These are not 'MY' numbers. And I'm simply just not running around in a panic.
I do not believe all the panic hype. YOU can call them 'experts' if you like, I don't. Just some people with opinions. Most of the time, most of them are dead wrong.

I don't know any more than you do. But yeah, we're making a fortune on cleaning and sanitizing supplies. And I have a year's supply of TP. I'm just not afraid, not afraid to die, I do not live my life in fear. I'm way too old for that.

I'll check back in a month. 😇

Our Jussie very recently came back from his Africa tour, meeting with his partners in corruption for his apotheosis to the UN seat. Won't they be thrilled.

I'm depressed. Most of major sporting events cancelled, the latest being the World Ski Jumping. By cancelling the event, Poland's Kamil Stoch became the Raw Air champion while Piotr Żyła lost his position in the Top Ten, and Dawid Kubacki lost his chance for the bronze medal in the entire competition series.

What would I watch on EuroSport during my meals?

The Government has just announced the state of emergency here for 10 days. Border control reinstated, limited international connections, all passengers entering Poland quarantined for 14 days, only grocery shops, pharmacies and drugstores to be open at the shopping malls. No public gatherings, no entertainment, no restaurants etc.

Some panic here over last two-three days. Interestingly, only the low-cost shopping networks were "pillaged". I could find most of necessary food at the local shopping mall; eggs, milk, meat. potato, onion were bought out. Luckily I did some reasonable grocery shopping before the panic started.

I wonder when the "locust" will start eating the amassed food such as flour, pasta, milk, or eggs. Now, or will they wait until something happens?

Now Toronto's big stores are ravaged, and there are long line ups outside - security letting one out, one in. But lesser known food marts are full of goods and empty of people. Almost nobody is wearing a mask or gloves. Crowding in on each other.

Actually I took the time to re-read this thread today.

It turns out to be an interesting historical document of these strange days.

I wonder how well many of these posts will age in the days ahead?

(Sheltering in place on the edge of the world)...

Pollen count in western Washington will be high this weekend; don't freak if you get a runny nose.

Yes, it has been sneezy out here. When gravel grinding down by Brewster Sunday and had a sneezing fit when I got back to the car. Right now my neighbors are burning so it is wicked smoky and I have a sore throat and a cough from the smoke.

Went out for a ride and cleared my lungs.

👍
We've all already got a 'leg up' on the many folks who are also dealing with all of this, but haven't yet discovered e-bikes! ;)

I was having such fun with my ebike for half a year.
Now it's about gathering supplies and not becoming infected.
The numbers now show how badly officials have been criminally negligent. This virus is the worst possible combination of very deadly but not deadly quick enough to limit the spread.
They can't deal with the sick nor with the bodies.
Time for no more bragging about quality medicine as it's all exposed as mere paper.

I guess that I'm actually glad I live in 'earthquake country' and don't expect the government to bail me out in case of any major catastrophe. It may not be totally pleasant, but I'm sure that my wife and I could hunker down at our home for 6 months if necessary. Fortuitously I partook in last year's Black Friday sales to supplement our rotating stock of dehydrated (Mountain House) and MRE type foodstuffs.

Biggest thing I had to go to the store for was pet food. If we're stuck at home for a while the last thing I want to see is our Boxer and the cats looking at us as a hot meal...o_O

I'm waiting for 'seniors day' at our local pet food store to buy an extra big bag of dog food. Mind you, Jazzy, our Chocolate Lab, would like nothing better than to eat 'people food'.
What the hell is it with Labs and food?

Well if things get really tough you may have to regard the boxer as a hot meal. Maybe I'll ride around the
neighborhood crying " bring out your dead!' just for practice. After all this is just a dress rehearsal for a real
pandemic, The plague killed 1/3 of Europe. Sure hope we're better prepared if that ever happens..
This is just a paper cut compared to what would have happened if Ebola had gotten loose.
