New to E-bikes

Greetings to the group! I live in WI. I just put together a Bafang BBS02 kit, 500W, 13.5 AH 48v battery, on my wife’s Trek Verve3 hybrid. Works really Good!
Thinking about putting one on either my Trek 820, 26“, front suspension mountain bike or my Trek FX 7.2 non-suspension road bike, 700c. Do not know which would be better. Need to see about re-programming the controller. I am in the Learning mode. Any opinions appreciated

Hello! I'm just across the border from WI in MN. I supported BBSxx series buyers for most of 7 years. The only real issue with the latest versions, BBS02B has to do with proper shifting and gear use. IF you pull up to a stop without shifting to a gear you would use without a motor you will lug the motor and premature failure. That said I have my two original 2014 BBS01s and have had zero issues. They are seven-speed and my wife keeps hers in 3rd gear and is a heavy throttle user and most comfortable at 12-13MPH

Reprogramming can make a difference. May I ask which Bafang dealer sold you the motor? That will give me a clue as to how it might be programmed. Programming has become much easier with easier access using a fellow named Penoff latest programming release.

Thanks for the reply! I would like to have the 5 modes in proportionately greater steps with softer starts, if that is possible. This DPC18 display has 5 modes in both Ecco and Sport. I purchased the kit thru Amazon marketplace from Greenergia. At the present time, my wife is pretty much staying in 4th gear with a 48 tooth Bafang chain ring. I made a coupler for the rear derailleur cable housing so that I could use the existing cable by adding a piece of cable housing bypassing the cable eyelets on the frame. I had to move the cable to the top side of the bottom bracket, ( not enough clearance between the mid-mount motor & the bottom bracket). I mounted the speed sensor magnet on the opposite side spoke from the sensor, (seemed like the best place). She did not want the battery occupying her step-thru, so I made up a rear rack from some metal that I had on hand. She still gets some battery bounce / vibration, depending on the road. Still need to clean & finish it up. Kind of in an R & D mode right now. Any and all comments and criticisms are appreciated.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND dropping to a 42T. There’s no good reason for a 48T and it can add additional stress. If you don’t want to spend the bucks on a “bling ring” like Lekkie a steel Bafang ring is pretty inexpensive. @Gionnirocket is a member and a good source for programming ideas. We sold HUNDREDS of 42tvand it’s also what I’ve run since 2014. I’m basing my opinion on literally thousands of e-mail and phone support over 7 years. Unfortunately I have no clue as to how your reseller programs. You’ll need a program cable and use the links I provided. Take screenshot of your settings and those of here with BBSxx series of motors will help. There are also n mn any web pages addressing programming. It can be a big overwhelming just don’t experiment without some clear reasons and reliable support.

Thanks for the complement! Would you have a recommendation for a source for a quality 42T? Is the Bafang Chain Ring a decent one?

The Bafang is fine. The Lekkie are lighter and better looking and may keep the chain in place better. It’s probably more of a budget issue. I’m running the cheaper Bafang since 2014. I have a Lekkie 42T in my parts box. The shop I worked with sold. But I think the new owner is good about supporting customers. California eBike.

Thanks! I have another kit coming so that I can keep up with my wife. She hits the hills and before I know it she is 2 blocks ahead of me! Just have to decide whether to put the kit on my mountain bike or my road bike. It is looking more and more like I will be putting it on the mountain bike.

Yikes$120 for Lekkie and 42T Bafang seem to be a bit hard to find. The Bafang were cheap but Amazon wants $53, nuts! But it looks like the cheap 42T isn’t common any more. Luna wants 20 Bucks for a 44T.

what do you think about putting a 38T chainring on? I have one from the Trek that I should be able to adapt. Looks like the offset is 9mm. I will have to check the cassette, (8 speed) to see what it will do.

But Bafang for some reason stopped offering 42T. Buyers liked the idea of bigger chainrings to squeeze out more speed.

I ended up getting the 44T ring for $21 shipped to try out. I know that 42T was recommended, but after some thought, decided that I kind of wanted to stay on a larger rear cog for more teeth engagement to help distribute the load. Going camping and hopefully riding this weekend and will finally get some miles on. Did 17 miles with the wife first trip, (pretty flat ride). She on PA1, me mostly PA0 until I get behind. Trying to figure charging strategy. Looks like 45% is a good point? Been working too much to take time to enjoy the bikes. Retiring at the end of the year at 70.
