I cannot understand all this hype about EP8 when a very similar Yamaha/Giant PW-X2/SyncDrive Pro has been around for a while... I think Shimano have just equalised their market position with the EP8 but are setting no new standards...

Part of the hype is because it IS new. Good marketing team.

Looking at the specs compared to the other motors, it's not mind-blowing, but it's a worthy upgrade on the E8000, and lighter than all the competitors.

I've always liked EMTB Videos motor coverage, as he gets far more technical than many other reviews, and doesn't pull his punches as much. Seems like the EP8 is solid overall.

I'm stupidly considering a dedicated eMTB next spring (though I'll get in trouble - I don't NEED a 3rd e-bike), so wait to see how it is in the real world... and what the deal is with that rattle while coasting.
