Motor kicks in if pedals move backwards

This is on an older rover, not sure of the year but it has 2nd or third generation controller

I don’t remember this happening before but have noticed it more often lately

If I move the pedals backward at all the motor kicks in and the bike jumps forward

Wondering if a sensor is malfunctioning or maybe just needs cleaning?
Have not contacted rad yet

Any suggestions would be appreciated

I had that happen when I installed a PAS in backwards on a kit install. Probably not your problem unless you had yours off for some reason?

It sounds to me like a call to Rad is in order. My bet would be bad controller, but if you knew how much I know about it, you'd likely want to confirm that for sure.

PAS ring and sensor are sending a signal that needs to be translated properly - and that's the controller's job.

Have not had the pas off but i guess it could have gotten bumped or moved somehow, tires and brakes have been done at a shop but i think it was happening occasionaly before

Will write rad and post back on what they say

I believe the PAS signal is an asymmetrical square wave pattern and the controller watches the timing to tell if the crank is spinning forward or backward. Chip failure in the PAS sensor or a chip failure in the controller could be vincent's issue. However .....

It's infrequent, but I sometimes get an ebike to jump forward when I am standing by the bike and positioning the pedals backwards to mount the bike. I just view that as a quirk of the electronics being able to formulate a valid signal on a quarter turn of the pedals. This is not something I worry about. It would be wiser for me to keep the PAS turned off until I'm on the bike.

Sounds like a safety issue--time for servicing? Let us know what you learn! I hope it's an easy fix. :)

Did you get it back in 2015 or the 2016/2017 version? Does the bike jump forward a little bit or does the PAS power stay steady if you continue to pedal backwards?

I tested out my 2016 radrover for the same issue and it is working as normal (zero power when back pedaling). I had to replace my controllers on both Radrovers in 2016 and early 2017 because of controller errors. That was about the time when PAS system was switched from the original motor cut-off at certain mph (PAS 1 4 mph, PAS 2 8 mph, ..... PAS 5 20 mph) to X amount of watts per PAS level until 20 mph motor cut-off (PAS 1 75 watts, PAS 2 175 watts,.... PAS 5 750 watts).

Both ebikes have worked perfectly since with the newer controller programming.

2015 version had two connections to the handlebar stem and the 2016/2017 version came together for one weld:
