Missing cover Giant Lafree e+2

After last Sunday ride, I noticed this. See photo.
I was expecting a cover for these square openings below the pedals on my Giant lafree bike, especially with the visible screw holes. My dealer checked with Giant and says there isn't one. Has anyone else encountered this or found a solution?Am I missing something here? I think something like a skid cover ? should I cover it?
