Operation Warp Speed - Wikipedia

Operation Warp Speed (OWS) is a public–private partnership initiated by the U.S. government to facilitate and accelerate the development, manufacturing, and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics.[1][2] The first news report of Operation Warp Speed was on April 29, 2020,[3][4][5] and the program was officially announced on May 15, 2020.[1] It is headed by co-chair of the COVID-19 Advisory Board, David A. Kessler.[6]

The program promotes mass production of multiple vaccines, and different types of vaccine technologies, based on preliminary evidence, allowing for faster distribution if clinical trials confirm one of the vaccines is safe and effective. The plan anticipates that some of these vaccines will not prove safe or effective, making the program more costly than typical vaccine development, but potentially leading to the availability of a viable vaccine several months earlier than typical timelines.[7]

Operation Warp Speed, initially funded with about $10 billion from the CARES Act (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) passed by the United States Congress on March 27,[1] is an interagency program that includes components of the Department of Health and Human Services, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health, and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA); the Department of Defense; private firms; and other federal agencies, including the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Energy, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Now they're looking into shining a light on a disinfectant for the covid. Hmmm. Sounds like something we heard lambasted because of who it came from.
Now it's OK to think about, though.
One of Canada's premier hospitals is studying it

"
Since COVID-19 first starts in the upper respiratory airwaves - particularly the front of the nose, researchers at Sunnybrook Research Institute are investigating whether a form of light therapy called Methylene blue photodisinfection (PDT) - a non-toxic dye activated by light and applied to the inside of the nose - can destroy the virus before it spreads into the lungs.

"We do know that photo-disinfection can kill the COVID-19 virus and we've shown that in the laboratory," said Dr. Cari Whyne, one of the principal investigators of the study and research director of the Holland Bone and Joint Research Program at Sunnybrook Research Institute."

Does everything always have to be shut down just so insults can be thrown?
This is why we can't have nice things, I guess.
Your buddy flatsix911 is the snowflake that's threatening to kick me off or have me kicked off. Wait a minute he might consider snowflake to be my third strike..... later

Great. Funny how conservatives attack wikipedia until they find it useful. Funny how conservatives and so-called libertarians push the free market until they don't.

I'm sorry you can't tell the difference between "the program promotes" versus "OWS successfully did the following...". Everyone of the footnotes in your graph is about government handing these companies money and saying "if you can get us doses, we'll buy them." At one time the CDC was the world leader in infection disease. It's a laughing stock now. The world also saw us as leaders but now they don't.

So what was the promise of OWS? "Deliver 300 million doses by January 2021." It delivered, by your own account, 2 million to California. This has been a debacle and had we taken it seriously millions of people would be alive today, but it seems you want to defend the least defensible actors and attack the actors whose resources are stretched thin and blame them for everything. Your argument about California is that we should be angry that we didn't stick every arm possible but why aren't you upset that we were to have 1/3 of the state vaccinated today, per OWS? Where are hospitals and medical facilities supposed to find workers to handle the vaccine (two doses) when they are overwhelmed with the disease?

Pfizer explicitly said it was not taking any federal funding because it feared the bureaucracy. So out of that $10b you list, one company so far got approval, moderna, and their money was tied with providing doses. And right now there are fears that because we've allowed the virus to replicate so much that it is mutating into a more worse virus and moderna may not even work now. So this vaccine debate promulgated by the right is a shitshow because the failure of OWS is putting us in danger.

https://www.politifact.com/article/2020/nov/19/pfizer-moderna-covid-19-vaccines-and-operation-war/

Let's revisit the widely accepted position by the CDC director in September, as the debate on the vaccine was heating up. He stated to the world that the "vaccines would help but focusing on masks would be more beneficial" and then Trump jumped in and said "oh no, he didn't mean that." https://www.cbsnews.com/news/covid-face-mask-protection-vaccine-cdc-director/ And here we are. Had everyone stuck to masks and social distancing, we'd not be here today. So you can bend reality so it fits your conspiracy du jour, but for everyone else not in a conspiracy bubble, we need this nightmare over. "But look- we paid $10b and we got 1 percent of the population vaccinated- it's a win." No, it's not.

I don't expect you to believe me and I'm fine with it because I know you already drank the kool-aid- it's pretty apparent. There's all this noise from the right suddenly and it seems like conservatives feel the need to defend their callous indifference to the human suffering that they helped create over the last year, especially since their mindless leader has been deposed (unless you believe he'll be back in March). The last year has been a s*it show and the federal government owns it.

Great. Funny how conservatives attack wikipedia until they find it useful.
I always use wikipedia because that is the kind of stuff my interlocutors accept. I use only authorities and publications they accept. I use only their accepted and approved scientists. For example, I use IPCC for climate, and I use NASA GISS and all the other top names people trust. The Hockey Stick people. The modeling people. Whatever you like, I use. Even when they are lying to you. I can use that too.

My box...your authorities, you lose.

For anyone who wants to actually spend time reading the full picture and not rely on wikipedia, this GAO report highlights all the failures and how many of their recommendations over the last year have been ignored.

OK, I'm reading it. Now, is that your evidence?
Is there any reason why they are the authority to take recommendations from, as opposed to some other bureaucratic wing or other?
These are the kinds of things one does if being a patient and kind interlocutor.
You get asked why these are the people whose recommendation opinions count. If you have a reason, then great, we can use that too.

"The federal government does not have a process to help systematically define and ensure the collection of standardized data across the relevant federal agencies and related stakeholders to help respond to COVID-19, communicate the status of the pandemic with citizens, or prepare for future pandemics."
It's gotta be that one guy's fault. Not Fauci, who predicted a surprise outbreak. Making sure everyone stocks up in PPE would all be that one guys' fault. Not any of those other guys, before, or maybe after, him.
Just that guy.

"As a result, COVID-19 information that is collected and reported by states and other entities to the federal government is often incomplete and inconsistent. The lack of complete and consistent data limits HHS’s and others’ ability to monitor trends in the burden of the pandemic across states and regions, make informed comparisons between such areas, and assess the impact of public health actions to prevent and mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Further, incomplete and inconsistent data have limited HHS’s and others’ ability to prioritize the allocation of health resources in specific geographic areas or among certain populations most affected by the pandemic. "

Oh, so that one guy, it seems to all be his fault. With everyone else, it was good, even when he, Fauci, of the NIH for what, 40 yrs(?), predicted a surprise outbreak of disease.

Not trusting the most experienced guy that has served 6 or 7 administrations be they Dem or Republican is a fools errand.
Were you in agreement with Scott Atlas?

Not when he misleads the public on purpose, it isn't. Not when he didn't prepare for what he predicted, it isn't. Not when he signals to the public that he is more beholden to the politicians to keep him in his job than he is to the public.
