Magnum MI5 vs BM Nighthawk

I'm looking to get my first e-bike. Actually, I need a pair as my fiance rides too. I've narrowed my choice down to the purpose built Magnum MI5 (rear hub), and the slightly more expensive shop built BM Shadow (mid-drive). There's about a 400 dollar price difference (multiplied by 2 since I'm getting two). Is it safer to buy from a big manufacture like Magnum or go with an aftermarket solution where it may be easier to find parts? Is one bike significantly better than the other.

I tried the Magnum at my local dealer and I didn't like the out come. I tried both models of the magnum and basically I wasn't satisfied.

From my perspective both the Magnum and Shadow are great bikes. Established companies; perhaps Magnum is a little better known. The larger companies will offer a warranty for the whole bike and the electric parts. With a kit, you have more risk and not necessarily better value if you're not starting with an above average bike to convert. The access to parts should be easier with the established companies as compared to some unknown kit. Savings in dollars doesn't always translate to equal performance, so look at everything, all the components on the bikes for about the same $$ as just a kit. Just a thought :)

Whichever you choose, you two will have a lot of fun riding together! Welcome to EBR.

@GeorgeE8 has a good point; test riding is really the best way to determine what will work best for you two. It's different for each rider.
