The Simple Fact is Our money needs to be kept in the U.S. for U.S. based products. We all need to be Less dependent on Foreign goods. Our economy will only improve by doing this. Why bolster the economy in other Countries ... Unless they are Allies. We have suitable products right Here in the U.S. that Will do what we need if we think about it. ?
This may sound good in theory, but I think you are missing the forest because of the trees.
My background is that I used to have a LOT of apparel manufactured. Hundreds of millions of dollars of apparel. We sourced the world to make. Some times we would make in LA. Some times we would make in Mexico. Most of the time we would make in China. Why? Because of what you are trying to do is converse of most Americans.
One of the ways I would describe the situation was: In America, a guy gets roughly $100 a day. In Mexico, a guy gets roughly $100 a week. In China, a guy gets roughly $150 a month. When you do the math on the labor component, you are now looking at the labor that is easily 10 times more expensive. What winds up happening is that the labor goes from basically free to a point where it is 60% of the cost of the goods. That cost is passed back on to the consumer.
Now in regards to the $100 jeans, while the guy was heading you down a path, it would not be that bad. Jeans are generally made in Mexico. You can thank Walmart for lowering the cost of Jeans. Back in the 90s when Levi's was floundering and had their own stores, Walmart wanted to put Levi's in their stores. Walmart wanted to order 2mm pairs for an initial order. This was also around the time when there was a made in America push by Walmart. Levi's were selling for $48 and up at the stores. Walmart wanted to sell them for $22 a pair. How'd this go? Walmart ordered the jeans and sold them for $22. Levi's now needed to make 2mm pair of jeans. Levi's hired to have them made in Mexico at the cost of $10 a pair. Jeans dropped down to $10 to make. This was something new, thanks NAFTA.
I brought that up because the point of keeping money in the US and how you are missing the forest because you are in the trees.
If you spent $48 on the jeans prior to this, $48 stayed in the country, but not in your hands. You got the jeans. Now for $22 you got the jeans and also have $26 in your pocket. You kept $26. Isn't that keeping the cash in the US?
How much money did you send to China? Think about that. The labor is really a little amount. The raw materials? Well, that can come from ANYWHERE in the world. So think some more about what you are gaining and good luck
