I don't know that military service is a good litmus test of someone's capabilities/abilities to function as commander in chief or president.
Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, and FDR had a combined 81 days of military service(Lincoln in the IL militia) and zero combat experience. They all capably led the USA through our greatest military conflicts.
We've had 2 presidents whose final military rank was as a private: Lincoln and James Buchanan. These two are commonly considered the best and worst presidents respectively.
