But....I need some advice on getting some new e-bike suitable tyres (aka tires for my USA mates)

My bike is a 29er running pretty much off-road tyres in a 29x2.2 size. The knobs in the tread have been almost worn down to the carcass.

All of my riding is either on road with any off-road being done on hard-packed road-base. So no loose surfaces or soft dirt or gravel riding.

I have not found a tyre in the 29x2.2 size that I would classify as a more all-round tyre for more on road use.

Does anyone here have experience with puncture resistant e-bike tyres for road use in the 29x2.2 size?

Any recommendations as to any tyres or sizes that would be suitable on the bike??

Cheers

NiL, there are many of us who trust Schwalbe tyres. Here is a link to their protection levels. My own choice is…
  • Schwalbe Marathon Plus MTB (57 mm width)
  • Panaracer Flatway Kevlar strip (40 mm width) glued inside tyre
  • Tannus Armour insert
  • Schwalbe tube with Sam's sealant.
An alternative is Schwalbe's Marathon E-Plus (range of widths between 37 & 55 mm) which has a more road-oriented grip. (The advertising blurb in this link is in German but the crucial information – sizes, protection level, etcetera – is in English.)

There's some love for the Schwalbe Big Apple tyres. @Browneye is a fan. Pushy's here in AU have them in 2.0" and 2.35" widths. That's a WIDE tyre for civilised riding. If you narrowed it up a bit it'd open a much wider range of options.

I run 700 x 40mm Marathon Plus tyres on my bike and will buy again. I like them plenty: hard wearing, fast rolling, well protected. They require a little care when cornering on wet, slippery paths but no issue on road and hard packed dirt. They're certainly not invincible - I've had the odd flat on them, but few and far between compared to other tyres. Run them with Tannus Armour for a truly dependable solution.

Edit: what David said.

Thanks for the prompt responses. Really greatly appreciated :)
I think I may be looking at the Marathon Plus type of tyre. I am not sure if staying with the similar width is wise or not. There is certainly no shortage of mountain bike tyres in the 29er range with similar dimensions but they are all mostly MTB tyres and I though that having something more intermediate might better suit the bitumen riding that I seem to do most of.

And now the bad news…

If you have narrow rims (20–25 mm internal width) it will be difficult, perhaps impossible, to mount a wire-beaded Marathon Plus on it – even without the Tannus Armour insert!

Wider rims (30–35 mm internal width) are merely challenging!

Hints: Use baby talc to help ease the Tannus Armour inside; use very soapy water to ease the tyre over the rim.

I'm currently running Schwalbe Marathon Almotion HS 453 TLE Tubeless 55-622 (28 x 2.15) .
Looks like they've been discontinued .
The new version is MARATHON ALMOTION HS603 .
This is from the North America site .

By the way , what bike ?

Hookworm is an option, Hurricane another.
Big Apples are okay - they ride nice but not a lot of puncture resistance.
Big Ben is another option for 29.

If it's a eMTB it should have wider rims, maybe 30-35mm for a 29'r.

2 slow leaks from thorns or thistles over the past few months on our various bikes. I may end up trying the armor liners.

I vote for the Schwalbe Marathon series. A long wearing, highly puncture resistant tire series, several of which are designed for your exact use. They are heavier and stiffer than some other tires claiming to be puncture resistant, but the Schawlbes deliver.

BTW - Several Euro based bike shops offer exceptionaly attractive prices on these tires with reasonable world wide shipping. Some of the styles they offer aren't available to those of us in N. America. Not sure about 'down under'.

Schwalbe offers some helpful specs on tire vs rim width here; https://www.schwalbe.com/en/reifenmasse .

Available in 29" sized and excellent on and off road with good protection, durability, rolling resistance and whisper quiet. Smooth in the middle for great road performance and big lug on the side for when you get into gravel or mud.

Here is a review I did several months back

Thanks to everyone who has responded to me with this invaluable information. There does seem to be quite a few options available to me. I will now look through all the tyre details that you have all graciously provided. With the conversion I put on the bike, the rear wheel has had to be changed to a 700c on the rear, while the front has retained the standard 29er. I realise that the rim diameters are the same but I believe the width may be narrower on the replacement 700c rim.
Hence, the question about the right tyre for my "Frankenstein" bike!! I will measure the external width dimensions of the rims today and then make a judgement call on the right width tyre from all the information provided here.

I have noticed that some of the tyres mentioned are not sold down here or are completely out of stock due to the worldwide lockdown.

Thank you for all the information!! It has been invaluable.

Cheers
