Update:
I've only ridden an electric bike around the parking lot of my LBS so I rented a Giant Explorer and took it on the local bike trail. I rode for 20 miles round trip. I tried the bike in off position first just to see what it would be like to get it home with a dead battery. Then I turned it on =D
The trail is totally flat having been built on an old railroad bed. The bike has three settings Eco, Normal, and Sport. It was pretty easy to maintain a speed of 14-15 mph in Eco, 16-17 mph in Normal, and 19 mph in Sport; all with about the same pedal cadence and in the highest gear. I got off the trail to try a hill that was about 3/4 of a mile up. I placed it in the normal setting and was very surprised to see my speed increasing as I up-shifted from 3 through 7th gears =D =D =D Going back down the hill I hit 28 mph and that is all I wanted due to a few curves and those pesky automobiles. The brakes are fantastic. My first time trying hydraulic disks. The battery was at 85% charge when I started and was at 67% when I finished. I have the biggest grin right now and it just makes me that much more committed to tackling my work commute with an electric bike.
