Hydra drivetrain update and parts

So after quite a while I believe I have my ‘skipping’ issue finally sorted on the Hydra (Magura brake failure has not helped testing time).

The smaller cassette and new chain provided by WW was a big part of the solution. That combined with an upgraded Shimano derailleur has really solved the issue. I was fortunate enough to get the new Shimano Linkglide derailleur and shifter via Europe and now have the following parts available if anyone is interested:

1. The original Shimano M8000 derailleur with the Garbaruk cage (green). This worked quite well even with the larger cassette. The M8000 can be had on its own as well as the Garbaruk cage. Also have the original shifter.
2. A brand new Shimano M8100 derailleur. I never got to try this out but was reported here to be a solution to the chain skipping as well.

If any of this is helpful to anyone, just let me know.

As an aside, I’m completely replacing the Magura brakes with Shimano. The failure of the rear Magura brake and the inability (under warranty) to get a replacement along with some discouraging remarks from my LBS about Magura in general, has led me down this path.

I have the 29”/27.5 ‘mullet’ in place. Soon 🤞 the Hydra will be complete and back on the trail.

Glad you're getting it worked out. Bikes are funest when they're ready to ride.

I'm sorry you went through some issues. Mine arrived essentially perfect and I'm over here feeling a bit guilty.

But, once you're on the trails the fun you will have. Last Thursday I went 5 miles up a FireRoad at 15 to 20 miles per hour to join up with my wife who had traveled ahead while I did trail maintenance. That's the speed she and I usually come down coasting. What a thrill that was. :)

Lsthrz, I'll be interested in hearing what you think about the Linkglide derailleur and shifter.
Curious as well!

Sad to hear about the Magura warranty not panning out, I was hoping I could get the Magura e-handles for the MT5 and integrate them into the motor controller for power cut, but they're hard to find it seems.

I suppose a new Magura 5 rear brake will show up sometime - pretty soon I’ll have lots of excess parts for that next ebike build I guess 😉

Bitrix syas they have them, but I would double check with them first

Sometimes Ebay has some too.

So many parts still out of stock, it is insane... I cant find a Magura MT7 BAT kit anywhere...

Thanks but Magura owes me one for free under warranty as it lasted all of maybe two months of intermittent riding. I’m happy spending the money on the Shimano brake set-up anyway. New brakes, new display, new drivetrain, twist grip throttle, mullet wheels and still great motor! It is really my custom bike now 😉

I was actually answering @kwseattle :)

@kwseattle check out Grin Tripwire if you want brake cutoffs and don't want the giant Magura e-levers (I think they're the 3-finger size) or can't find them. They come in several flavors (opener, closer, connectors, length) and they've got a pretty straightforward set of youtube videos for installation.

@Lsthrz the M8130 Linkglide set is what I realized I should have got before ordering the M8000 XT for that 11 speed wide-range but I already made my purchase and had trouble finding a US source for them any way. That's the 11s wide-range Shimano now has since they quit making their new 12s shifters with the 11s switch on them.

WW is teasing me with fairly frequent updates, hopefully before mid-feb I'll have my motor finally!

8000>>8100>>8130 it’s been a journey 😉 but I appreciate all the info @loamoaf and others have provided. Just got the Hydra back with the new Shimano brakes, but it’s a pretty nasty snow day here in Colorado, so best I could do was a spirited ride up and down the two levels of my underground parking garage. So far so good but real test is coming.

I was very lucky then. I had a BAT pin in upside down and it came loose. I was fortunate enough to find all three parts and install it correctly. (BAT pins may have started out life with some noble purpose, now they're just an opportunity for your brake lever to seperate from the rest of the unit - for those that don't know.)

I was thinking I would order a couple of spares in case one comes out or breaks in the future. Let me know who you find them through please.

What company sent out an email saying, "We eat bike parts for lunch" ? Worldwide Cyclery. Did you try them.

I have the basic pin

So I am functional, but I want the BAT with the adjustable Knob

and that is backordered everywhere so far.

Magura's shop page with both models

Ah. I have the basic pin too.

I tried google and watching several youtube videos to find out what this mysterious BAT pin is for when mine fell out. Didn't I see that the adjustable pin only fits certain iterations of the Magura brake? And, people who had the adjustable pin commented on one video I watched saying it does just about nothing. Magura responded saying it just takes up a little bit of free play slack or something like that.

My understanding is that it fits all the brake model listed. They look like they use the same fitting as the basic one, but because of the knob, you can easily rotate the pin in various positions.
It is supposed to give you some adjustment about the bite point, but I suspect it is minor, so may be why some people find it useless.
But curious as I am I thought I would give them a try :)

A few stores like Modern bike, worldwide cyclery, the bike shop or ebay have a few in stock.
I ordered 2 on ebay :)
