How is the maintenance on an R&M? Are these able to be serviced at local shops generally?

Maintenance on the electronics or the entire bike? During warranty or out of warranty?

Ideally, you'd want to go to an R&M dealer as they'll know the most about what they're working with, but barring that, a Bosch-certified LBS with a decent amount of experience will be fine for 99% of the work you'd need done.

If you have a belt drive Enviolio or Rohloff, you'll want to find a shop that's also comfortable with those as most LBS don't generally have a lot of experience with them. Shops specializing in high-end touring bikes are a good bet for this.

As for warranty - generally your shop can go through the individual parts manufacturer for anything that doesn't have an R&M logo on it, but you may be asked to pay labor as they won't be getting reimbursed from R&M like a dealer would.

Thank you!

Recent personal experience taking an R&M Nevo Rohloff HS to a Trek shop. No problem with Bosch-related updates and so forth but balked at reinstalling rear wheel due to lack of familiarity with E14/Gates belt.
How did you reconcile ultimately?

i brought my Gates tension gauge with me, and the service dept allowed me back in the shop to show them how to install/tension belt and how the shifter unit fits back into the dropout. There were other issues as well, but the bottom line is that they were easy to work with, and I’d recommend the shop to anyone in DC with a Bosch bike.

If I were contemplating an R&M purchase, I’d interview your LBS in advance and get their thoughts. I have a shop near me with mechanics I really trust, but they don’t sell (many) ebikes. I’ve been campaigning for Bosch certification for a while and just last week sent their contact info to the Bosch rep (who I met here) to get the ball rolling. As it turns out, the shop has the maintenance contract with a local govt entity and is seeing more Bosch ebikes coming through the shop, so I have my fingers crossed that soon I’ll have another option a mile away.

Finally, even if hours away, I’d maintain a relationship to whatever extent possible with your R&M dealer bc the bottom line is that for R&M-specific parts, it’s your only source. In my travels, I’ve learned that R&M dealers in the US differ greatly in terms of which parts they have on hand vs what must be ordered from Germany.

I see in your profile you’re from DC? Feel free to DM, and I’ll be happy to give you recommendations curated for our area. I’ve owned R&Ms since 2017, so I’ve got opinions.
