Glasgow Boys we are here Whaoo Whaoo

If you are a UK football fan you will know the end of that little ditty but as this is a nice family orientated site I won't finish it off ;)

Anyway I am Paul from sunny Glasgow, a quaint little village near Scotland's west coast.
I have just got back in the saddle after a hiatus of over 15 years due to health problem. A couple of months ago I got a visit from a friend he was on a E bike, a Chinese Fat bike. I had never seen anything like it before, hell I had never seen a electric powered bike in real life never mind a monster that's tires looked like they belonged on a tractor. He offered me a go but I was doubtful I could ride a bike now due my lungs (COPD) and having been so inactive for so long the weight piled on. I got on it and it's weight took me by surprise, this thing was heavy but once I got it rolling that was not a problem anymore. It was a S Pedelec (you see, I have picked up some of the terminology from EBR vids already :p ) so I used the PAS until my air was gone, which did not take long believe me and then went throttle only and that gave me a nice breather literally. I fell in love straight away and I bought a Rad Rhino and it came yesterday and I am very happy with it but I have been finding on other forums it is a nightmare to register and insure them with these L1e-A laws. It is classed as a moped, it needs to be insured and registered with the DVLA (UK's DMV) and you have to wear a motorcycle helmet!

Apart from all that nonsense I hope use this as a tool to get back to some semblance of fitness and drop a few stone who knows maybe get my lungs working a little bit better, you never know! Scotland has many beautiful places to ride that are not too hilly, I used to hike as a youngster and some of those would be a perfect pace for me to start my ebike life.

Hope to catch you all in the forums

Welcome aboard! And best of luck to you on the health front... I'm down 54 pounds this season, having biked about 3,100 miles so far since getting the bike in March! While I also introduced a far more sensible diet at the same time, which has surely contributed to the losses, I went from taking no exercise of any kind, to all that biking (which has also helped, of course!). I'm stronger with more stamina now of course; I can easily tell... most rides I stay in Level 1 PAS nearly all the time, vs this past March/April when I was starting out, I was heavily in Level 3, with hits of Level 4, just to complete any rides.

I also have COPD and my ebike has been a godsend. I have recovered mobility that I thought was lost for good. My stamina has increased gradually and so has my recovery time when I get out of breath. I know I'll never be an athlete again but here in my late 60s, I didn't expect to be anyway. I live about 5 miles out of town so even simple errands involve at least a 10 mile commute. Couldn't do it on a regular bike; what would I do when I got out of breath? On the ebike, I can set the pedal assist to whatever works. Sometimes I push it a little because I want the exercise, but I always have the option of dialing it up or going throttle-only if need be until I can breathe easily again. BTW I ride a Juiced Bikes CrossCurrent S which is a speed pedelec. Best wishes to you.

Thanks guys, you have definitely given me hope that it is possible to reach the goals I have set for myself. I have a two year health plan set in 3 month stages. This first stage is just about getting myself active and mobile and sorting out a healthy diet. No real goals as such but I just know I will be in a wee bit better shape come the end of January. I will let you know how I get on in the coming months. Thanks christob and Bruce, I appreciate you sharing your experiences with me.

Paul
