Giant LaFree old model.

I have an old model LaFree which has a Brushed dc motor. I've taken the motor off and tested it with a 24volt battery pack and the motor seems to run fine. The question I want answer for Is there supposed to be oil in the gearbox attached to the motor. I had to remove a sensor from the side of the gearbox and theres a small O-Ring underneath the sensor.
