European members: Speed unlocker and police

Hey everybody, I ordered an ebike with Bosch Performance and I would like to have the speed unlocker installed. Recently I read that this is totally illegal in Greece (and probably in Europe) and a ridiculously huge fine awaits the black sheep who dare break the law. Now, I never heard of anyone getting a fine for speeding with a bicycle and there are tons of emopeds allowed on the bicycle lane that can definetely drive faster than 25 kmh - hell, even a regular bike can drive faster than that. So as long as the bike rider is responsible and not being a jerk, I do not see the point of the 25 kmh limit, especially if you are alone in a forest in Greece and you have 5 herd dogs running after you, who definetely do not want to play.

That said: after corona I intend to travel around in Europe and bring this bike along. Did anyone here who is a European resident have their bike checked for installment of unlocker chips? What is the situation with the law in your country?

Any input from European residents would be highly appreciated

Thank you all and safe rides!

What is illegal in Greece and the EU as a whole is chipping a 25kph ebike to go higher than 25kph.

Class 3 are not illegal in Greece or the EU. Many class 3 ebikes are sold by dealers in Greece but you need to have insurance and license plates for the ebike. Except on certain islands (Chios, Lesbos, Samos, Limnos) where no insurance and registration is necessary.

If you want class 3 speeds, change your order and buy a speed pedelec version. There are plenty offered from Cube, Trek etc.

I would advise not chipping a Bosch motor as it is very risky and could result in your motor being bricked since Bosch has built in software to detect tampering. You would also invalidate your warranty.

The class 3 Bosch speed motor is offered on many ebike models from different brands sold in Greece. Why didn’t you just purchase one with the Bosch speed motor?

What ebike did you order?

Thanks but I do not want a bike for commuting. I am an enduro rider. I ordered a fully mountain bike, I just thought that with a speed upgrade I could possibly have better chances at escaping those *** dogs that are lurking literally everywhere.
And anyway, if I were to go through the hassle of license plates and paying fees and insurance, I would buy myself a brand new budget off-road motorbike. Nowadays you can purchase some amazing motorbikes for less than what I paid for my Cube bike...

Oh ok understood.
45kph on off road trails is very fast in my opinion but if you feel safe by all means.

I carry pepper spray for the dogs and a handgun for trouble makers.

That being said chipping a Bosch CX motor is very risky and could invalidate your warranty or brick the motor. If money isn’t an object for you then I guess it doesn’t matter. Just keep in mind the LBS you purchased your ebike from would know you chipped it and they would refuse any warranty claims or even perform maintenance on it.

I carry pepper spray too... :)
Thanks for the info. Money is an object. This bike is like a dream come true. Like when I was a child and would save up the whole year to buy a game on Christmas.

You made a great choice, Cube builds fantastic ebikes.
