eMTB Options For 2024

Nice trails to ride on. 👍
Alberta? Lots of young trees.
I'm actually from BC, dad was Canadian. 😊

I put my ebikes on the scale...the Stance and Trance are nearly identical, with a half-pound difference in the battery pack. So obviously they fit a few more cells in the Stance. I have not tried interchanging them, but my guess is it would work normally.

They are both 47lbs, plus their pack - the Trance is 9.4 and the Trance 9.8, roughly (125kg total?) Standing on a bathroom scale isn't ideal. LOL
They are heavier than I thought, guessing them to be low 50's instead of high 50's (115kg?). Oh well.

Both have tubes in the tires, but I don't think it makes that much difference...maybe quarter to half a pound. The SmartSams on my extra wheelset for the Trance have tubes, the Minions are tubeless for any hardcore offroad.

The Giant Reign E is another option for a big and tall downhill rider. I think I rode one in a parking lot, which wouldn't give you much feel for actual maneuverability on the trail.

EDIT: My tubes weigh in at 7oz (.2kg).

The Kenevo would be a great choice, IMO. A couple of buddies own Levos. Ryan (Front) rides a Levo SL and Kelvin a Levo CC. When it comes to technical single track both Levos are nimbler than the Trance when cornering and straight-a-ways. However, being the lightest rider of the three (5’ 6”/136 lbs) I outpace them on sheer climbs with the help of the Yamaha power plant. 80NM of torque from the Trance vs 90NM from Kelvin’s CC and 35NM of output from Ryan’s SL. BTW, both Kelvin and Ryan also come from dirt bike backgrounds and draw from a wealth of experience riding their former machines which bodes well in their favor. Great guys to ride with, BTW.

Anyways, I’m guessing Ryan is over 6’ tall and rides a large SL. Here’s some recent footage I shot of us on local trails.

If Kelvin wants to star in your videos, he's going to have to slow down! ;)

The local rides here likely won't rival any of the trails in the mountain resorts but that would warrant a 3 + hr drive to get there. Winters here can be brutal which might explain the slighter boreal conifers up here. The abundant deciduous growth which has always been a mainstay of the parkland adds a pleasant mix to the evergreen forest. I’m just stoked knowing that I don’t have very far to ride from home to get to our local trails.

My SM Trance E might get the Miss Piggy award as it clocks in at just over 57 lbs with stock tires/tubes using a hanging scale. Only items that remained on the bike before the weigh-in were the F/R mud guards. Not sure if this is close to the real weight or if my scale is out of calibration. Regardless, the bike performs well on the trails (in most situations) even though I have to exert slightly more effort in keeping up with the boys. I wouldn’t hesitate to add it to the mix as it represents good value with decent power to weight ratio.

Starting in grammar school and then even more in high school, they kept forcing that metric crap on us telling us eventually everything would switch over and our inches feet yards miles pounds and ounces, were going to go away. Hmmm...well, that just never happened did it?? LOL
It was really confusing when we traveled to Canada and their imperial gallons and kilometers had to be calculated over to something we could understand. 😜
How could gas be so cheap....oh, they sell it by the liter. So I guess an imperial gallon is four liters, eh? (Notice I said 'eh'. LOL)

A lifetime working on metric cars and bikes has at least given me a rough understanding of equivalent size. And yes, it's very much more simple, but I still couldn't tell you how many millimeters are in an inch, or how many kilograms in a pound. LOL Let's see, is that a british pound or a us pound??? 🤣

I decided to " make sense" of my random spanner collection and build a board with them lined up by size.
No worries, 6 mm, 7 mm, 8 mm...and then we start with those fraction things.....reach for the glasses to read how many 16 th of an inch that spanner is.

Apparently you guys call them wenches? Something about nut twisting? Is that what you mean by a " rough understanding" ? Twisted......

That video gave me a good laugh! :)

We, process engineers need to understand unit conversion pretty well. Right from the top of my head I'd say an imperial gallon would be 3.785 litres (dm3), the pound is 0.454 kg, the inch is 25.4 mm sharp, the foot is 0.3048 m and so on. Temperature conversion is more tricky but 50 F is 10 C, 60 F is roughly 15 C, and 20 C is 68 F sharp. Still, I could not quite grab what the British Thermal Unit (BTU) really was... :D

P.S. Go figure if the battery charge was expressed in BTU (which is pretty legit!)

That would be 'box-end' or 'open-end' wrenches. Or even 'combo' or combination wrenches that have one each on each end. Or, err, wenches. LOL

Then there are socket wrenches, that isn't a wrench at all, unless you call the ratchet handle a 'wrench'. And there are allen wrenches, that aren't wrenches either, sometimes they're even like a screwdriver they call a 'driver'.
And torx - those itty-bitty star tools, also called a 'wrench'. Oh, and then there's the adjustable-end wrench AKA a 'crescent' wrench, but I think that's actually a brand name. We have a lot of that here in the states - whomever the company was that invented something that's what they call it, like a copier machine is routinely called a 'Xerox machine'. Even the soda can dispenser down the hall is called a 'Coke machine'.

Dear lord, don't even get me started... 🤣

Interesting marketing option, though.

You can buy a frameset, which means if you have a full power bike it's viable to build up the option of swapping wheels depending on what bike you want?

Also says something about how cheap the manufacturers must be getting parts when the frame-set is 80% of the price.....

The riders that purchase this bike are not on this forum. I saw two carbon fiber kenevos in the last week. One one the trail, one on the rack.

The great thing about the kenevo sl is there are now second hand levo sl's coming up on the used market with unused original running gear!!!! I'll be picking mine up in a week - comp carbon , EVERYTHING was removed from new and stored , the owner transferred all his exotic parts across the his kenevo sl and put the original bits back on MY levo sl last night. I went carbon against my alloy bias , there was a similar alloy version at a similar price, but the new parts were all from his new carbon levo (potentially messy warranty). Plus my bike is black.

I'll be keeping the giant until I decide if the sl motor is enough for the days I'm doing shuttle runs with the kids - what I've saved buying this bike used is more than the giant is worth! ( actually, it's about what the giant cost me) .

I'd been procrastinating between an orbea rise and levo sl for ages, whilst the orbea is more sexy I think the levo will suit my style of riding more, and I can't help feeling nervous about the custom motor tune on the orbea ( it's a pita on the giant - after 3 years I've found that parts evolve and are not always backwards compatible )

Now be prepared for the eMTB vs EMTB debates

Cool! Bring it!
