Elderly and new to Electric-Bike's

Sort, with help, the better China direct sources. No reason to pay a reseller for a product purchased direct. Your Island country may be kinder on duty charges from China. And of course currency exchange can play a part. With a trusted seller moneys can be safely reasonably done by an international bank exchange. More options...

Do you have a local bike shop, or good bike repair spot?

Having lived on an island where everything was inflated, and having used more than a dozen motors and kits, I’d opt for a well supported brand of motor, controller, and display. A bike with common enough parts that even a slow boat to the island would still at least be available.

Which countries is your island nation most amenable with?

PS. Insanely jealous that I couldn’t retire to any number of islands!

Mr. Jaszewski, I am neither retired. Nor, am I new to this island country. It is my homeland.
And, I know of no other. Of course, I hope you someday get your wish to retire. However, I am not retired. Nor, a casual visitor to our island.
In fact, I can assure you that there is no place like your own home land. And, for where I live there is no better place for me to live.
Indeed, where you live is just like where I live, it's just not the same geography. Our problems and issues are just like those of your own. No different. In fact, our lifestyle is probably very similar. I get up and work the same as yourself. And, without all of the conveniences you take for granted.
Thus, be happy that you are probably surrounded by family and lifelong friends and on an equal basis as I have no doubt that we live quite similar lives...just like everyone else on this board, without the need to provide our address, our telephone number nor our shoe and hat size.
Bless'
Norwin

A visit or even a phone call might get answers to some of your questions.

Good morning,

I tried to find this company as I had never heard of them. The website has been terminated. It must have belonged to someone who should not have been in business. And, maybe simply imported a bicycle or two and tried to appear as though they were a 'real' company and has since simply expired like their website.

I still have never seen an electric bicycle ... 'here'.

But, thanks for your info.

How ironic I am here and you from wherever you are and found this company had been here. Ironic, huh?

I'm located in the northeast corner of the state of Pennsylvania here in the USA. The internet has made us a global community.

And, I also tried to find the second company you named. There is no company address. No location. No place of business. No business listed with that name in our company registry.

Again, maybe someone trying to become a company who is without any assets, or bicycles or experience. Possibly maybe with two bikes they built or found. But, I could find nothing beyond the name and the pretty pictures.

Darn it.

It happens, doesn't it. Someone trying to appear real. But, who isn't.

Norwin.

It's very true. Unfortunately, it is possible to have a large internet web page with little or no physical footprint.

Unsure if you saw my post #16 on this thread but there is a Trek and Electra dealer in Georgetown, perhaps they carry ebikes? Their Facebook page shows a room full of pedal bicycles from those brands.

Mr. Dewey,

Indeed, I do know of Mr. Bills. They've been around for generations. The family and the store are well known to me. They are a hardware store that does sell bicycles. It is them that I would go to find handlebar grips or such, or maybe to help put the bike together. However, I do not believe they sell e-bikes. Nonetheless, I will run down there this morning to check them out. Sir, you're most kind to help....and to advise as you have. I am seriously very grateful.

Please, what e-bike do you own? And, why? It is this specific information, I need...and I wish to have help in my search.

By the way, I have written to three e-bike companies as I narrow my search. I eagerly now await a response.

Respects, Norwin

Norwin,

I know Cayman islands is not super big.
@Lenny (Len Mattioli) is a E-bike store owner and a businessman. He has a house and couple of big boats in the Cayman Islands. He is a regular visitor and has few ebikes on the island for his usage.
May be you may known his boat captain Mark Ebanks who takes care of his boats.
If none of the companies are able to help you, I'm sure Lenny can get you couple of bikes to try out.
He has dealt with Pro Yacht company and you might be able to pick up your bike from there.

I hope you find a good ebike, if you can't, let me know.

Hi Pal,

I Googled your friend Lenny and whilst I have never heard of him nor ever seen him, we do receive a couple million tourists every year. Thus, it is not surprising I don't know him. Nor, could I find an email address for Mr. Lenny. Of course, I'd very much like to meet him, and if you have an email address, I will write him and connect. Our trying out an e-bike would be totally 'terrific'...indeed.

With respect,
Norwin

Please message me your phone number. I will have the boat Captain or Lenny call you and hopefully you can try out some ebikes.

Good, it’s helpful to have a bike shop you trust do the assembly, servicing and maintenance, I suggest you ask about the Electra Townie Go! or the Trek Verve+ that comes in several sizes including an XS size which ought to fit riders from 4’9” so this ought to be comfortable for your wife to ride. If Uncle Bill’s do not carry ebikes ask if they would assemble a bicycle and mount an electric kit motor and battery, my local bike shop didn’t carry ebikes 3 years ago but they were happy to help me put a motor on my pedal bike. If they are willing to convert a pedal bicycle, ask if they can build up an Electra Townie Original 7D with 24” wheels for your wife, it’s a comfortable bicycle for shorter people, and a good candidate for a mid drive motor conversion. As for my ebike I bought a Bafang 36v BBS01 mid-drive motor from California Ebike, Doug Snyder is the owner and he keeps a good stock of Bafang spare parts. Good luck with your search, Mr Mattioli’s shops are called “Crazy Lenny’s” and he has a wide range of quality ebikes.

Mr. Ravi, how can I private message you my email address or phone number?

Hover over Ravi's name on the left of his post and it will open up a small info window. Then click on the green "Start Conversation" button to send him a private message.

Perhaps you misunderstood my intent. I am retired but have also lived on an Island. In my case a US Territory, St Croix. There are many special circumstances involved in Island living. One I experienced was the difficulty in getting parts for repairs. I didn't have an eBike in those years. I'm not sure why Felix/Feliz is so adamant protecting BionX but doing customer service for 4 years I've had dozens of calls from frustrated owners wanting to buy batteries for replacement only to find out systems were proprietary. ANd the batteries were sold at inflated prices compared to much of the market. I'd think the Cayman might even be more difficult than US territories. Making sustainability important to the eBike owner. Heck getting BionX support or getting anything replaced at reasonable cost from a company embroiled in bankruptcy seems a pipe dream to me. Regardless of how many are claimed to be on shelves, one still has to get them off the shelves and shipped to Cayman. Whereas some of the other major motor builders are far easier to access and have no bankruptcy issues nor are buyers locked into proprietary parts. It seems we tend to want newcomers to embrace whatever decision or purchase we've made. I think that's a mistake and doesn't take into account the buyers location and needs. But as always, YMMV. What do I know...

BionX is a Canadian maker of electric motors for bicycles. Its first motors in the early 2000s, while still named EPS (Electric Propulsion Systems) [1], were kits for retrofitting [2]. On February 27, 2018 BionX Canada went into receivership, all 80 employees were let go and the company was shut down temporarily to find a buyer.[1] Grant Thornton Limited was appointed as Receiver.[2]
In June 2018, parts of the business were sold off to three other businesses,[3] and the rest of the company assets were liquidated via online auction that ended August 15, 2018.[4]

Published December 6, 2018
HAAR, Germany (BRAIN) — The last of BionX Canada's operating subsidiaries, BionX GmbH, has announced it will close its offices near Munich on Dec. 10 after more than 10 years in business there and an unsuccessful effort to find a buyer. The Canadian e-bike conversion kit supplier entered into receivership in late February and all business activity at its factory and offices in Aurora, Ontario, was suspended as advisory firm Grant Thornton reviewed assets and began searching for a prospective buyer.

It appears they were bought and have a new parent.

Hmmmm.....

I do what most people on the forum do and block your posts but this post of yours was brought to my attention by a friend so I was going to reply to it but I see the news has caught up with you. They are actually Parl of a huge conglomerate and have promised to continue production. In any case there's a ton of parts around, enough that companies like Ohm still haven't missed a beat in producing their wonderful and popular line of BionX equipped bikes.

Each of above have gone worlds over our head. We only wanted to know what was your recommended e-bike based upon our location, our intended use, our age and weight, and your contributing same in a concise manner via your experience - was all we two were intending to receive.

We cannot receive such technical matters as you've taken this discussion as these are subject far beyond the pale of our elderly combined knowledge or our wish to NOW know...

Please, keep the answers simple as to what bike you would purchase for your grandparents, ok - as we' are yet to even see an electric bike. Much less understand how they work.

With respect,
Norwin

My grandparents died 70 years ago? People can only make suggestions, no one can or should tell you what bike to buy. I've seen lots of good suggestions so far, keep reading and it WILL all come together for you and your wife. Every one of the "experts" on the forum started as you have done.
