E3 Dash Fenders

The Dash has 700c x 45c tires, the exact tire width as I ride them is 48.3 mm. I understand I need 65mm fenders in order to have enough clearance, there appears to be a conflict at the fender support where the space between the seat stays is about 57mm.

Anyway, I can machine that area of the fender down to fit, but I am having the hardest time figuring out which fenders to buy/install. Any help very much appreciated.

I'm presently installing the Planet Bike Cascadia 29er fenders on my Dash. I've got the rear fender done and it looks fantastic. It fits the wheel very nicely with lots of room to spare. As for the seat stay, I did a prelim install and marked where the seat stays hit the fender. Then using a half round file, I filed curved indentations on the fender edge. It worked great. As far as the seat stay mount, I found I needed to add a 1/4" spacer to bring out the plastic bracket a little to clear the seat stays. But that also worked out just fine.

I haven't done the front fender yet, but it looks like it should work. The brace has a threaded hole for the fender front bracket. And the forks have threaded eyelets that should work for the mounting the fender stays. I'll probably have to mount small L brackets at those eyelets, but that should be fairly easy.

Right now I'm just taking a break. I am now mounting the Top Peak Super Tourist DX rack that I got. And that also is going well. Then it's off to the front fender.

[Correction] I used a 1/2" spacer for the rear fender seat stay bracket. Also, I used 1/4" spacers for the bottom rack mounts. That was to allow clearance for the fender wire stays.

That bike is going to look very nice with the Topeak Super Tourist rack.

Update: I just finished the front fender mount. My idea about using small L-brackets worked pretty good.
Front fender also looks real good on the Dash.
So, bottom line is Planet Bike Cascadia 29er fenders are a viable option for the Dash.
I'm tired now so I'm off to bed, but tomorrow I'll try to take pictures and see if I can post them for you to see how the fenders look.

Sounds like you guys have found some great solutions! I'm a big fan of Topeak stuff. I like the look of the downhill fenders they've got that mount to the suspension fork arms vs. head tube/steerer tube but I haven't actually tried them myself.

Yeh, just an old habit of mine. I actually drill out the threads of the nut so they become hexagonal spacers. At my house nuts are so much easier to find than spacers.

I just happened to click on the Cascadia 29er fenders link in post number two and found out it points to 45mm Cascadia fenders.
Just to be clear, these are not the fenders I installed. The Cascadia 29er fenders I bought were 65mm wide.

Thanks Charly for the recommend, I installed those fenders on my bike Friday night and it all went well. I made a couple changes to your installation protocol.
First, I installed the bracket backwards and below the seat stay mount instead of using a spacer.



Second, at the forks I backed out the bolt enough to exactly fit the width of a zip tie, looks better than I thought it would.

Great job.
I actually think I like your way of doing things better.
The front mount is simpler and easier way, which is always good.
The back mount kind of hides the bracket underneath, making it look like a cleaner install.
Isn't it great how well the sizing of the 29er fenders fit our 700x45 tires?

In another thread I was asked about mounting both the rack and the fenders and if there is a conflict, so I am answering that here and linking back to it to keep the information in one place.
There are two mounting holes (different thread sizes) and the easy way is to install the rack in the upper and the fender in the lower. That results in a 1" gap between the fender and the rack. A harder way is to install both through the lower threaded hole, fender under rack, and to do that you have to replace the (4) 15mm bolts attaching the rack to the seat post brace bars with 10mm. Or you can just cut the 15mm bolts down, which I did with a metal cutting band saw.
The other choice is where to attach the rack brace bars. I went to the seatpost clamp and it works well. Charly's photo in a early post in this thread shows him going to the stays which are drilled and tapped for them and that is the intended destination, I just didn't like the angle visually.

Thanks for the clarification Charly! I try to add links here and there but sometimes they are off. In this case, I think the page lets you choose a correct size but defaults to 45. Would hate to lead someone to the wrong thing, glad you chimed in

I'm wondering how you ordered the 'black' 65mm as I can't see how it can be accomplished here (maybe they're out of stock). Can they be had elsewhere for anywhere near the same price? Also, is there some reason to 'not' get the spring version of the Topeak Super Tourist rack that I am missing?

Thanks for helping me make my first Dash accessory purchase. I very much appreciate the links in your other post as well. I am basically following your lead right down to the 'slime' (Ride-On) product for the heavier duty tubes (thank you for pointing this option out as well).

and installed them on the Dash 2015 model today. Can't state enough how grateful I am for this comunity. The package does not have the right bolts to get mounted if you want to use the existing threads. Trip to the local bike store help to get the right bolts. The front fender was a bit tricky and I followed the instruction of Brian.

I used for the rear mount some Heat Shrink Tubing to prevent scratching of the paint.

As Brian suggested, reversing the bracket yielded in a better curve of the the fender.

Overall, I think the fenders could be little bit smaller, but it is not too bad. I would prefer if the hardware is black as well.
