Do you think this bike suitable for BBSHD?

Hi guys. Long time lurker. First time poster from far away Finland (EU)

Anyways I'm building my second ebike and this time I want to use the BBSHD. I've found this fatbike from a supplier in Zhong Guo (http://www.aliexpress.com/store/pro...cicletas-MountainBike/135834_32368834375.html). It looks like a knock off of the Salsa Bucksaw which is just what my wallet would be able to survive after all the import taxes have been paid.

I'm trying to figure out whether the BB on this bike is suitable for BBSHD. The supplier has provided me with some measurements, so I know that it's 120mm wide. But I am however still unsure about it's diameter and threading. I have obviously asked the supplier for more info but while I wait for their reply I just wanted to ask the more trained eyes among you guys what you think about the BB of this bike. Will it be suitable for BBSHD? I attached a more detailed picture of the BB.

If anyone has experience of this particular bike / frame than any information you could give me is gold =)

Peace!

Got some more pics from the retailer. And of course I'm confused =)

It's cleary threaded, but based on these I'd say the inner diameter is ~30.8 - 31.0mm. Shouldn't JIS or BSA be something like 33.5 mm?

Does this mean that this BB shell is to small for the BBSHD, or just a very tight squeeze?

Hi start here:

"threading" is irrelevant. The BBSHD has it's own thread and retaining nut. BB diameter and length are the dimensions you need to confirm. Also make certain the chain ring will clear the chain stay.

I was researching Salsa Bucksaw for a FS-BBSHD build few months ago.
I think you may need an offset crank as the normal cranks would not clear the chainstay.
See if you can get a battery bag and custom battery design. Makes things much more stealthy and probably be able to carry 52V,18Ah battery.

I've actually seen that video before. But now when I look at it closer - darn it if that isn't the exact same frame I'm currently looking at. It looks like there's enough space for the chain ring.

Nice build!! If i'm not mistaken the BB on salsa is 100mm. The frame I'm looking at now is 120mm. Should be wide enough =)

I mention the threading because that would suggest that we're looking at an JSI / ISO bottom bracket, right? The other prevailing standards seem to be non-threaded.

Hi,
Where did you get the battery bag and who can you recommend for a custom battery design?

Luna cycle and Electric Rider both have teardrop shaped top tube battery bags as does HiPower Cycles. Also, Luna and Electric Rider both do custom battery builds along with RPE; all of these companies offer replacement batteries or rebuilds.

Hello, I'm not sure if you've bought the bike yet, but I don't think you will have any issues fitting the BBSHD into the bottom bracket.
If you do the only issue I see would be being able to fit it all the way through the bottom bracket. I had that issue with my Cannondale and a Cannondale that I built for someone else.... It would start going through and gets stuck halfway into the bottom bracket. I would try to twist it, turn it and put a little pressure on it, but I didn't want to break anything so I tried something and it seemed to work without any problems.
What I used was a Dremel(rotary tool) with a grinding bit and started to bore out the cylinder where I felt that it had been getting stuck and basically just started shaving off little bits of metal without overdoing it.
I kept going back and forth and trying to make it as even and as smooth as possible. I would also clean the filings out before I would try to fit the BBSHD into the cylinder so nothing would get stuck in it that could possibly mess up the unit.
I tried like 3 or 4 times to push the unit in slowly and the first few times it would get stuck but move in a little bit further each time. Finally just did the entire cylinder make sure it was as Hollow as possible without sacrificing the strength of it and the motor slid right in with no problem. I noticed that with a few cannondale's this was the issue and it was only some extra metal that was in the cylinder I guess from the welding process. That's mainly what had to be shaved down and it was towards the top of the bottom bracket.
Each time it worked perfectly fine without any issues and repercussions. The first one was with the bbso2 on a Cannondale Trail 6 and the second time was the BBS HD on a Cannondale Trail 6.
I think you'll just have to go with the process of elimination and do one thing at a time. Make sure that the unit fits into the bottom bracket and then once that's taken care of then you can worry about the chain ring clearing the rear dropout and what to used to fix that issue. I never had any problems with that, surprisingly enough.
If you have any other questions that you think I might possibly be able to help you with please feel free to email or get in touch with me. Your posting was a little while ago so I'm not sure if you're taking care of this already but if not it's not a big issue and it only takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
I was actually curious about what battery you were planning to use with the rear suspension being in the way with a mid frame type battery pack.
I'm starting another build right now and that's an issue I've been dealing with. Not sure if I want to go with a hardtail or rear suspension. Either way the problems don't stop there because I'm looking to order a carbon fiber frame from overseas and everything else seems fine except for the bottom bracket shell thickness. They tend to vary a lot and I don't want to go through boring out an entire bottom bracket because I don't know how that will affect the strength of the entire frame being that its carbon fiber.
I'm really interested to find a battery that would fit with a rear suspension set up the way yours looks to be.
Hope that information helps and I look forward to seeing the finished product! Best of luck, Jason

Luna does not do custom builds for batteries. The Electric rider triangle bag is much more durable. FalconEV triangle bag is slightly better than the ER, but both are good choices. EM3ev's is OK, Luna takes the last place in quality with cardboard for inner support and a slot at the base for wiring just a scissors cut that will fray.
