"Dawkins knows that his defintion of "gene" in the Selfish Gene is unusual so he returns to the subject in The Extended Phenotype in his discussion of the selfish replicator. Dawkins is forced to concede that his use of the word "gene" is incorrect. That's why he says,

I am happy to replace 'gene' with 'genetic replicator where there is any doubt.

Nevertheless, he tries very hard to defend his point of view by claiming that geneticists and molecular biologists can't come up with a good definition of gene either. This leads him to make some very silly statements about genes and cistrons. He defines his genetic replicators in terms of alleles which means that they don't exist unless there is variation in the genome. He then goes on to restrict his discussion of changes in frequency to the results of natural selection, which means that his "genes" are effectively defined by the mechanism he prefers.

So it's about Punnett square type of genes. A gene is the alleles. No alleles means no gene. Alleles are put in the Punnett square. No alleles no square. No gene. When mutants arise, they are often all called genes; gene for this color or that color or gene for that disease or other.

So humanity has 100% human genes, 98% identical to chimp.
We have differing alleles between siblings unless identical twins, thus the 50% figure.

Alleles are the theoretical article that produces different traits from other people's trait of that feature. If no difference in a feature, then no alleles exist for that feature, therefore no gene exists.

Just like for Gregor Mendel. Dawkins is a throwback of a century and a half, long before the word "gene" was used.

That's how you became unable to comprehend the "That there monkey is closer than your brother" riddle. Differing definitions underlie the problem of the riddle and virtually nobody even is aware as they discuss these topics.

These different traits are theoretically produced by differing alleles, which are known to produce MUTANTS because they are from mutations in the gene.
A new allele is a mutant gene. Once they see that there is a mutation, that affirms that the feature itself is caused by a gene. Otherwise, it's not on the map. There can be multiple alleles represented in what is now called this locus.

Barry I agree with you that Trump did some useful things. I'm P.O.'d enough about globalization & China in particular I just spent a week refurbishing US made amps so I don't have to buy anything made there. Can't buy bicycle frames from taiwan, nor motors, but can buy derailleurs, Sun & expensive shimano is Japanese. Went to a Mexican restaurant for takeout today... stepped inside and the dining room AND bar area were pretty full.

We are supposed to be in purple tier so that means only outdoor dining so I asked the guy if they re-opened indoor dining today... he said "We never closed"... doh.

Worries me because the majority of their diners are in the at-risk age group. I hope they stay well... or maybe they are all *real* Christians and are protected by BarryS armor.

Now as you can tell, the Dawkins/Mendelian gene you mostly have had in mind from school, doesn't exist physically. It's a theoretical construct that needs no physical evidence other than a difference noticed in a trait, a difference that some of the population have and others don't. And because it's imaginary only, there are some difficulties to checking up on that well.
In animal husbandry you can breed a mutant to see if the outcomes in offspring that result, show ratios that indicate the presence of alleles, so it might be a gene seen metaphorically, at work. You can find that out if it's easy to breed the animal in large numbers quickly. You can begin to believe that it's not an environmental factor difference that makes the different trait.

Newsom has got California so locked down, I wish I had the joy to try and find out since I prefer GMO-free ingredients even if choices are limited.

So back on topic.

Every place where I get take out, at least my favorite locations are pretty strict. Bars are definitely off limits and sealed off and covered letting you know you are NOT welcome. As far as the dining areas, the tables have been relocated against the walls or stacked with chairs completely removed.

Some places have decided to stay open for dining even in spite of orders to close, but I see this as an act of desperation to stay in business else they risk losing everything. The margins for business survival are that close.

Venturing out, you really "feel" the business closures and the impact covid-19 has had on the business community. I just think people have not yet grasped how bad it is.
