Diavelo Protanium shaft drive Ebike

I had a few shaft drive motorcycles over the years and always enjoyed the low maintenance aspect of them compared to chain driven. The motor and controller are both located inside the shaft drive assy. I also like the fact that the removable display acts as the key for the ebike.

Why would any bike manufacturer put a shaft drive on a low power 250W ebike. That tiny motor is simply inadequate for anything but a bit of boost on level ground. I feel sorry for ebikers in EU where the regulations make it impossible for any hub drive motor to complete on a level playing field with mid-drives. Then again that may explain why the mid-drive motor manufacturers pushed for the regulations.
