Custom Tire Sizes

I'm trying to throw some 3" tires on my cargo bike (20" wheels) and think I'm going to go with the Federal XL 40mm rims, but I'm not sure if there's anything I should be looking for vis a vis tires. Will any 3" tires (for 20" diameter) work or is there another piece to the puzzle that I should be thinking about?

You've checked the fork, chain stays and seat stays for clearance, right?
