Choosing a $3k bike and narrowing down options to suit my needs

Hi

This is my first post and I really enjoy searching your forum.

I live in New Orleans so deal with hot summers (5 months) and the perfect warm fall winter spring Riding season (7 months).

I am A 59 year old guy, fairly active, in good health but a little overweight at 220 lbs.

I am Looking to
get some exercise - a lot of pedaling like a standard bike but some assist
get out more because I wouldn’t be slogging it in hard wind,
Not wanting to sweat profusely on an 8 mile commute to work on a lakefront path
Pleasure riding in New Orleans and some trails
some 20+ mile rides

I am looking at a couple options that I found online in the $3k range with all the upgrades and want to make sure I haven’t left out one to consider.

I would like a bike that is mostly city but also some offroad, light trail etc. I will be moving to Colorado in a few years.

I would like a substantial motor / battery combo, top speed and Class 3.
Reliability - USA made is important.
Mostly peadaling with some assist but the ability to quickly accelerate and fight the elements (grade/wind/tired overdid it ride home).
HIll climb levee path and later steeper extended road grades out west.
No baskets but a simple back rack Platform to strap to would be good
low access - I had both my knees replaceD - have good mobility and no pain but off a little on balance. Step Throughs or low profile city bikes
maybe even put a future young grandchild on the back

I have been reading a lot of reviews and youtube and was looking at the following
Any others you would suggest

Electrick Bike Company R.
Low access - some off road capability
I like that it is nearly all made in the USA - custom to your specifications
seem to have the best service and least issues

Juiced bike hyper scorpion or scorpion
seems more like a moped than a pedaler - but would like your insights
nice rider access, features, very powerful

Rad
Rad Runner Plus
Rad Step Through

I am leaning towards the Electric Bike Company R bike

I appreciate your thoughts, other brands, should I spend a little more?

Thanks

TOm

We've met the fellow that started Electric Bike Co in Newport Beach, he has a very nice bike shop right on Newport Boulevard. We were just in there last Saturday, stopped to see what they had for conventional pedal mountain bikes. (nothing BTW, everything is sold out for the 2020 model year)
He is a car-collector and racer, seems quite affluent, they're making a very nice product. Definitely 'beach-cruiser' oriented, and that's the majority of their clientele at their main shop.

Other than that I don't know anything about their bikes, but they seem to have a very good reputation, and they look great. Big balloon tires, a geared-hub drive system, decent components.

Please understand this is not really an 'offroad' bike. Dirt bike paths are fine, but this just is not a mountain bike.
If you plan to ride on class-regulated bike paths, check your local rules for ebike classes - in most cases Class3 are prohibited. For most of the country Class 1and 2 are lumped together and generally permitted wherever regular bikes are.

Make sure this is the style of bike you like/want. Test ride as many in your locale as possible, to get a feel for bike types, configurations, and componentry.

Oh, and on Juiced and RadPower - both have sold a lot of bikes, and mostly owners are happy. These are all in a general genre of ebike, hub-drive mini or scooter type, kind of an SUV of a bike. Larger wheels roll better over undulations of the terrain, but the mini's have been popular for many riders.

I have mangum metro plus and like it a lot. they make other similar models. No problems first 500 miles, except the charger, which mfg promptly replaced.

I did a bunch of web searching on the bike brands in town - everyone is backordered till fall and have nothing in the stores.

The Cannondales, Treks, etc are all Class 1-2 with 250-350 watt engines

I was hoping to have some get up and go and they suggested a class 3 starts getting into insurance, liability issues

Looks like the Evelo Aurora Limited Edition might just be the perfect bike
belt drive, mid drive, 750 watt motor

what’s another $1000

Watt Wagons makes high quality ebikes with powerful Bafang motors. You can reach out to the owner directly on this forum (@pushkar) as he is very active on here.

Made is USA is preferred not a non starter

I liked their power and top end speed but it’s really more of a moped
so pass on that

Upped my budget to $4k
interested in the 750 watt belt drive Evelo Aurora Limited Edited

will check out the wattwagons step thru
damn those add ons are expensive and not exactly obvious
thanks

Thanks - that’s an interesting bike

have the wattwagon up to $5200 and not sure I didn’t skimp

Looking for a step through or low clearance
replaced knees are fine - but the balance is a tad off on quick stops

What's a moped? None of Watt Wagons bikes are like moped.

Not sure which bike you configured. But if you did City Commuter I recommend for the needs you described:
  • Default battery (you shouldn't need a 2nd one for the distance you're describing)
  • Suntour Mobie 45 suspension fork
  • Shimano G-C7000-5D 5-Speed IGH
  • Tektro 725 Brakes
  • Default rack
  • Default Light (Lezyne Macro 1000 Lumen)
  • Default Tail Light (It's brake actuated)
  • Carbon Riser Handlebar
  • 2A Charger
The total for that configuration should be $3297

If you go with the Magura MT5e Brakes then the total would come out to $3496

The bike comes standard with two top end components
  • Kinekt Suspension Seatpost
  • Brooks B17 Imperial Saddle
You also have to consider that this bike comes with Gate Carbon Belt Drive which requires no maintenance and will last 4 times longer than a chain/derailleur/cassette which you will need to maintain and replace.

I decided to go belt drive - hence the Aurora

The wattwagon Ultimate commuter Pro listeD above gets near $6k with modest upgrades
It’s the newest bike

The Juiced hyper scorpion is very moped like - it’s fast, goes far - bench seat

I am looking to do mostly pedal assist With good power, some hill climbing and would like a throttle at times

The City Commuter I described fit that bill.

Yep, there's only two versions, no such thing as Ultimate Commuter LE, unless he's referring to the City Commuter as the Ultimate Commuter Light Edition. ;)

What's Ultimate Commuter LE?

I think there's only Ultimate Commuter Pro 😐 (?)
Ultimate Commuter Pro

  • New UC Pro (aluminum frame with integrated battery that's flush)

Doh!

Been looking at too many bike models

Watt wagons
ultimate Commuter pro
step thru

would you go two battery? 21v?

i am thinking 1 battery with the step thru and the 3k motorrun at lower wattage
