(' or just Guys and Gals) What is the advantage of an elliptical or square chainring?( must be some advantage or these things wouldn't be manufactured)

I think the idea is to give one more 'thrust" in the dead zone, reciprocating movement has always seemed to have a quirk or two to Me.

I don´t foresee the industry massively ¨gearing´ up to produce oval rings. Fear of impact with my
top tube makes me hesitate. Guess I´m just elliptically challenged.

Me too. They were a thing in the early 1970's on road bikes. Now oval wheels! That could be fun. So why not triangular wheels to tap into pyramid power.
