Bosch Performance CX died today

Hi all. Just over two months ago I bought a Merida 29er equipped with a Bosch Performance CX motor. I have put exactly 945.0 kms on it when it completely died on my way home from work today. I only use my bike for commuting to and from work (30 kms round trip). I was climbing a long hill when the assist died. i have taken out the battery and cleaned the terminals. Removed the LED Intuvia display and cleaned that too. Nothing. I put the battery on charge when I got home and it is not accepting the charge. I am taking the bike back to the retailer tomorrow. I will keep the group informed.

Well, that is awful news! I hope it is something simple. From what I've read they have to swap out the entire motor assembly if there is any problem inside the case.

Hi Jeff, i hope it is something straight-forward too. I guess we shall see. I will load the bike up onto ute and take it back to the shop this morning. I am hoping they will fix it quickly... I enjoy riding my bike!

@ThomasK, was the battery taking a charge alright before yesterday? My gut feeling is that you have a controller problem or something within the battery failed, given the abrupt stop. Be sure to take the battery charger with you in the morning; I can't tell you how many times customers have come in with a bike problem related to their battery and don't have the charger with them. The shop will want to check that charger to make sure it isn't part of the problem. If your battery hasn't been charging properly for a while, then you could've experienced a low voltage cut out, a protective feature of ebike controllers to keep the electronics from damage due to inadequate voltage.

Hi Ann

You were right. It was battery failure. I took the bike back this morning and they ran the diagnostics on it. Everything responded as it should except the battery. They swapped out the battery for another one and it worked. So Bosch has been notified about it and hopefully they will replace it. It is literally only 9 weeks old so it should be sweet. I wonder what causes such a catastrophic failure?

I have been dealing with Segway batteries for years. They work for years or they die and early death. It can be just one cell that failed, or the Battery System Module (BSM).

Either way if I read the Bosch warranty correctly the Batteries are warrantied for 2 years.

From Trek's Website:
2 years
RIDE+ motor, controller, & battery pack (or 600 charges, whichever comes first)

Glad you got it working!

I share the same problem !

Well it isn't working yet. It is in Bosch's hands. Is it wrong of me to want it fixed like a grand prix pit stop?

Perhaps dealers should petition Bosch for a spare battery or two... Bosch could make the cases in yellow and red zebra stripes and put LOANER on the side so no one would want to keep the battery long term. When a customer has a battery failure the customer uses the spare till the replacement comes in.

Bosch, are you reading this?

Jeff, I called the shop to ask them how long it will be to get a new battery. they told me that it just left their shop (so that's two days) and it will take another two to get to Sydney (980kms away). Then it will be Bosch that decides. All up about a week they said. Maybe quicker maybe longer. I think longer is the probable scenario. I said oh... they said I should consider myself lucky because some batteries from other companies take 6 weeks. I said what about Bosch having a loan battery for clients? Unlikely he said. 'You know this is a $1200 battery we are talking about...' so no go... I asked if the warranty clock stops everytime something goes wrong. He just laughed. So 9 weeks in and it looks like it will have spent 11 percent of its life to date in a workshop... if i am lucky.

I guess this is a smaller dealer. We generally just swap the battery or provide a loaner if need be. Maybe it's the way things are handled in the US. Although we have only have had a very small failure rate of Bosch batteries. Definitely way less than 1% so I wouldn't sweat it too much
