Hi..

Newbie here.. I'm looking for my first real ebike.. Right now I have a Trek Shift 2 with a hilltopper kit.. It's really OK but I now need a Step Thru and the Stunner really seem to check all the right boxes..

I like that it has both PAS and Throttle..

Is there any other bikes in should be looking at? I also looked at the Magnum and Pedego Bikes..

I'm just looking for opinions from you guys who know whats out there..

Thanks, Joe

Step through with PAS and a throttle also includes the VoltBike Elegant, Surface 604 Rook, eProdigy Magic, Amego Infinite, Ariel Rider C-Class, RadCity Step-Thru, Aventon Pace 500 Step Through, Blix Aveny and Sol models, Evelo Aurora & Galaxy models, EG Maui, and Velec R48. Also look for bike shops local to you that do conversions, for example Philadelphia Electric Wheels are selling this Breezer Uptown with a 350w BBS01 motor and throttle.

Dewey.. Thanks for that list of bikes.. I'll check them all out..

I'll mostly be riding pavement and rails to trails .. no real mountain/ off road stuff..

BTW.. I'm Male . 65yo and about 180 lbs.

Thanks Again, Joe

Sure, no problem, when I first got into ebikes in 2016 I tried a 24v Hilltopper kit wheel but I found it could not haul me up the hills on my commute so I after a bit of trial and error I ended up getting a Bafang BBS01 mid-drive kit which I just fitted to another bike. Local bike shop support would be desirable. For brands with local dealer presence you would expect them to support you, for example my local Pedego dealers are great at customer service. For DIY I've had success ordering motor parts by mail, though I tend to do most of the work myself and use my local bike shop to do that bike work I don't have the tools for. A lot of the brands I mentioned sell direct-to-consumer where you get a bike in a box shipped to you or to your local bricks-and-mortar or mobile bike shop for assembly, some have dealers but Google and ask around locally, for example I just found out the other day there's a bike shop close by that sells and services Blix ebikes so if I were in your position and starting again I would probably test ride that brand. Don't let it put off buying remotely if you can find a local bike shop prepared to maintain the bicycle components, and some of these companies contract out work on the motor to a local bike shop although warranty reimbursement rates vary and I've heard some brands won't pay the equivalent local workshop hourly rate so it can be hit or miss, so if you go this route I would recommend contacting the customer service department of a brand you're considering, and ask questions from owners about the ownership experience on these forums, and check they can and/or have found local warranty/tech support before you buy.

Hey Dewey..

What do you think of the Evelo Aurora? I know its pricey but I really like the specs..

Joe

I like it a lot, the powerful BBS02 motor matched with a Nuvinci internal geared hub and battery mounted centrally on the step through frame is practical and well balanced. I’ve test ridden a couple of cargo bikes with the Nuvinci CVT and found it easy to maintain my cadence when Transitioning from flat to hill. Equally importantly for me is my local bike shop has experience making adjustments to a Nuvinci set up so check that’s true in your area as well. A solid choice.

I also think it speaks well to the durability and ease of use of the Nuvinci that Motivate chose it for their Class 1 bikeshare pedelec, NYC Citi Bike is getting 5,000, DC Capital Bikeshare is getting 500, I've ridden one and think its great.

For what it's worth I just ordered a Biktrix Juggernaught https://www.biktrix.com/collections/bikes/mountain-bikes

It delivers on Wednesday and I can't wait. I switched out to the 3" tires as I ride mostly pavement or gavel as well. 750W mid-drive with 120 Nm of torque with a throttle for 2 grand certainly was the best deal I have found in 2 years of research. The Stunner is an equally good deal but I have hills to climb and the design of the handlebars would make the bike a bit unstable on climbs.
