Best Lock for Ebikes

I purchased this huge beefy padlock (XENA XSU69) a few years ago (from the UK, as I could not find it in the US). It needs a big beefy chain. I tried an Abus chain but the links were not wide enough for the 18mm diameter of this beefy boy. I don't think anyone would mess with this one and have much success quickly.

That lock is cool!! The chain needed to fit would make it crazy heavy, like boat anchor chain. I like it!

Went with a Laclede 3/8" (10mm) Square "Lockdown" Security Chain Got a fantastic deal from Western Rigging Supply 35.80 for 4 feet of it. It is indeed heavy. Soon as I got it I had my Young buck Kid (22) take the Bolt cutters to it and he couldn't even mar this stuff with the bolt cutters.
Barely left a mark from where he clamed the jaws down. He was impressed.

If you are in the market for a heft Chain that is bolt cutter proof dont get it on Ebay. Much better deal if you go straight to some of the rigging companies. the Same chain with the sleeve to protect your bike would of been 170$ on Ebay, I paid a total of 65$ with shipping for the 4 foot length from Western Rigging Supply. This Chain plus the 2 Club Locks should do the trick.

There is no single lock that a $25 angle grinder can't cut through, however, you can make it more difficult and cause a thief to want to just pass on your bike and move to the next less secure bike. I use a combination of 2 locks and cables and haven't had issues yet. It does add to the weight but like I said, has worked for me for 2 years. I use 2 of these and 2 thick cables - https://www.amazon.com/Winner-International-UTL810-Utility-Yellow/dp/B00CCIM1YQ. Each lock weights 3-4lbs but worth it.

Cheaper, faster and far less noisy than an angle grinder is a Bic pen, which in the right hands can be used to open any tubular lock in a minute or two. Take note: the The Club Bike Lock uses a tubular lock.

Faster and easier than a Bic pen is a special tubular lock "tool" (that is, pick set) that you can buy on Amazon for $20. The set even includes a clear tubular lock for training purposes. (Link Removed - No Longer Exists)

Kryptonite stopped using tubular locks in their U locks in 2004 because the Bic pen hack was so widely popularized. They also offered a free replacement program for original purchasers of the U locks. After I cracked my tubular U-lock with a Bic pen in 30 seconds, I availed myself of that program and got one of the newly designed locks.

Twist a Pen, Open a Lock

Bottom line, any serious bike thief can quickly have their way with The Club Bike Lock without making a peep. Keep that insurance paid up!

Jazz is a bit more disappointed, than I am, in locks. Some require 5 minutes of screaming noise from a powerful grinder. Sadly most will ignore. IMO insurance policies and a good lock are the best. Unless you can be a cranky bastard like me and wheel you bike in or not shop where you can’t. Almost true.

What's your gripe with one of the better Kryptonite locks (thinking of the Fahgettaboutdit Mini)?

Bike security is not a one fit situation for all, in my opinion it must be related to what you are trying to secure. My primary concern is to deter the low level or opportunist from securing my possession. Ultimately what I am doing is buying time with any type of lock or security device. I want to delay the thief so that they are caught or damage the tools that they are using. A determined thief or professional is a different story, they have all of the time in the world and have substantial ability to deploy countermeasures to defeat any and all obstacles. With that being said i have some personal things that I do secure my bike.

1. Thou shall not use cable locks for primary or secondary security
2. Thou shall not use Kryptonite locks of any kind
3. Laclede 3/8" (10mm) Square "Lockdown" Security Chain w/ HARDNESS RATING OF 62-65 HRC. Can be ordered in custom lengths, i have couple at 2 foot lengths.
4. 2 different "Viro" shutter locks with 2 different keys. Benefit of using chain as protection against bolt cutters, hacksaw attack.
5. No less that 3/8" in chain size with the proper lock to fit. (who care about weight, that is what turbo on an ebike is for...)

6. Primary and secondary chains are case hardened and my tertiary cable is just for seat deterrent.
7. Time must be taken on how to secure a bike with chain. Due to tire size and frame geometry all chains will not fit, nor should they.
8. I have a special mini double saddle bag just to carry both locks and chains just behind the handlebar.
9. 4 minutes. That is my estimated time to delay a theft with me to be able to react with other countermeasures. Upon failure, insurance.

No lock is good for long term parking. That lock can be cut in a couple of minutes. I have their biggest version. 3 minutes protection, at best. Hopefully we park we’re people pay attention. I lock to avoid opportunistic thieves and carry bike insurance for the professional thieves.

Oh and they are darn heavy! But still my choice.
