I guess I could say I somewhat envy the type of riding you are able to do Stefan. I once did similar. But now in this phase of my life I live in an extremely rural area of Texas where one would be very unwise to ride the public roads. Narrow, winding, hilly, choked with wildlife and domestic animals that are not fenced off the road. But I am blessed with vast tracts of private land I can ride and a strong eMTB is just the ticket. It's a different life ... bikewise. But it is what it is for now and I enjoy it.

EDIT: I do suffer a bit of envy over folks here who have wonderful mountainous/forested areas to ride as well as those who tour through beautiful agricultural areas. Maybe I will travel one day.

You've made an excellent point Reed. A proper e-MTB just hates riding paved roads; yes, some of us had to "roadize" their e-MTBs. It is better if that e-bike type is used in the appropriate environment as you described.

@Stefan Mikes - for what it is worth, due to the power of the Hydra and the squishy definition of what class it is in, I decided to take the California Motorcycle Safety Class to help me get my M1 certificate to my drivers license. And I strongly urge others with a greater than Class 3 but less than the 150cc (FYI- watts and #cc do not equate!) motorized cycle classification style of eBike to do the same…. (Hidden topic here is “Impounds”!!)

Hello folks!
Today is a show and tell day. Here I show a successful use of dynamic balancing beads to balance the SX-13. And while in the stand, I observed some faults that give me clues where the wiring issue still remains and might be.

So what are balancing beads? These are little ceramic balls that go inside a tire (tube/tubeless) via the Schrader valve core or as the tubeless tire is mounted on the rim. As the tire spins, the beads go into a position to automatically stabilize and balance the wheel. Every stop and start, the process happens again. With the 13 inch wheels, it doesn’t take much speed to get things balanced…

So as a demo, the really poor video below shows the scooter on a footstool stand. I am showing only one wheel here; two wheels rolling/powered is much worse! No music so you can hear the vibrations. The water bottle is so you can see the vibrations…

So I measured half of a 4oz bag and believe I was able to slowly add approximately 56g of beads into each tire. Using the kit tools, add just enough beads to start backing up the clear tube. Then using a hand pump, blast the beads inside the tire. Use pumps pressure relief to bleed off the air slowly. If the pump comes off or pressure released too fast, beads will go everywhere!



This is a slow process and maybe 56grams was too much, but as you can see from the video below, the vibrations have been tamed considerably!!!

Well that was a fun simple fix. I may try these on my wheels that shake versus lead tape or fishing weights on spokes and simple gravity balance…..

Yes you do need a license for your scooter if it were to be ridden on roadways on the Island
I was referring to the stand up scooters with tiny wheels those are not supposed to be on bike lanes

@Rome - The ones you were showing in your photo were Bird/Lime like rental eScooters that are common in Silly Valley - San Francisco and other big city’s on the Mainland. They might not go as fast as mine, but they are defined as motorized scooters as per the reference I provided for you in the other thread. Yes it looks like they need a special license on the islands. But not in California! And more my concern for you is how the Island accepts your non-classified, non-labeled, motorized cycle (Hydra). Do you have a motorcycle license? How will you get it to DOT standards….

And the scooters you showed are not “toys” like the text you show above that allows them to be considered a pedestrian and utilize sidewalks. So ”YES” as per your above text, they are to be used on bike paths and roadways; not sidewalks….

@Rome - you clearly do not understand and I do not know why I even try to help you with your constant disrespect here and elsewhere. I provided you the Hawaii Motorcycle Handbook that defines the typical three class system for ebikes; almost identical to the California Motorcycle Handbook. It also has all of your laws; escooters like mine are allowed in your bike lanes; IT HAS TWO AND LESS THAN THREE WHEELS, just like the Lime scooters in that SF photo. Stop arguing by posting random Google finds or photos that claim to fit your agenda; WTF that is I-still-DK!

Your state follows the NHTSA standards. The point here is, your Hydra will not come in with a NHTSA bike classification sticker as it is not defined as a Class 1-3 eBike. Therefore it will more than likely be held by Hawaii’s inspections as have others to your state (again I provided an example!).

The WW Hydras are more defined as “motor driven cycles” as they are greater than 1HP (750w). A 2.3kW typical configured Hydra is >3HP! Motorcycles are classified by ICE CC; and CC doesn’t equate to Watts….

Now please stop posting on this thread about a topic you deleted from another thread; seriously not cool! I do not care if Hawaii allows scooters or not; no plans to bring mine on next visit. I only tried to help educate you on your own local laws. But sir, I B DUN WIT YA!!!

Your last posts above will be the first to violate my “LIKE all posts on my adventure threads” (not FAQ!) policy. And I may remove the ones given…
