Bafang 250w mid motor noisy

Hi!

Today, after a 500meters denivellation, my motor was very hot!!! I stopped for 10 minutes and then , when I was going on, my motor gave a new noise that I ever heard! Like a big mosquito, this noise grows and decreases according to the pedelec...Is my engine Breaking? 600km....One summer...

Yes, I think you broke something if the noise doesn't go away. Watch out for those long hill climbs.

The nylon gears in the motor could have gotten too hot. They sell replacements.

They have plastic gears in the mid drive motor? I knew they did in the geared hub motor, but I've never seen the inside of the mid drive. Maybe some new grease if they do have gears. But what do I know, I had to Google "denivellation"

YEs, nylon gear… Hence the engine works like normally, maybe you're right , only grease (which had probably melted) would do the trick! But if I open the motor to grease, why not replace the nylon gear in the same time? Hummm….

Im not very enthusiastic for these ebikes, I did one denivellation of 500 meters and crack! noise…. Should I have made this denivellation in 3 times, and wait 15 minutes each time I stopped? MMMhhhh… Maybe the solution is to spread cold water onto the engine while making the denivellation!

What motor is it? Bafang mid drives are reasonably reliable and I would say your experience is not normal.

tomdav!

it's a bbs01b Bafang 250watts 36volts, 600km, one year, still same time Under warranty, but I changed the speed to 35 and by this I lost my right to warranty...But, yes, it's not normal and im not at all satisfied!

I have a BBS01 as well. Love it for how quiet it is and no problems since I purchased a few years ago but I'm not a power user. You should be able to replace the gear for not much money, assuming it's the reduction gear that is failing.

I don't think speed would make as much difference as heavier weight and hills. Good luck.

First version BBSxx series motors were notoriously poorly lubricated. They are also sensitive to be pushed to hard. Riding them like any multigeared bike and shifting and using gears as with a acoustic bike there are few issues. But these motors need to be run at higher rpm. Not shifting when coming to a stop and throttling from a stop or pedalling without shifting with PAS will overhear the motor.

that being said the plastic gears are our slowest selling replacement part. I still have 2014 versions in my parts bin, unused.

You’d have to be riding it like a single speed to melt the gear.

I installed a bbs01 on a friend's dahon, be six years ago, still runs well, very quiet, I did stress on him at the time not to lug the bike, use the gears allow the motor to spin up, more recently I upgraded his old 26" ebike that had a front motor to a mid drive, I encouraged him to spend a bit extra and go with a bbshd since it will climb hills better and won't overheat easily

dAz63, I understand but if a bbshd climbs better the hills, that means a very powerful battery too...is necessary.

thomas Jaszewski, your replacement parts like version 2014 would be of no help for me because my mid engine is a bbs01b, that means the nylon gear is a version that comes after 2014.
Thanks though.
P.S my engine was manufactured in 2018 (says the package)

A 48v or 52v battery, I just standardised on 48v for all my bikes, the motor has plenty of torque, climbed a long steep hill today while pulling a trailer with a load of shopping in assist level 4 out of 9 while in lowest gear, motor has no trouble pulling up the hill while pedaling and it barely gets warm.

I am about 90kg, bike is 30kg and the trailer with shopping another 25kg

oh good!
Im surprised mine ebike was so HOT! assist level 4 out of 4 ( my settings) I Don't remember what gear...but I was pedalling with good help.
There were 4-5 km, 450 m hill.

I only mentioned it since my 2014 never needed a replacement. We sell the only BBS02 gear available for BBS02B or BBS01B. I only broached the subject because of it being a relatively rare part to fail. Typically noisy motors are in need of lubricant. If not rider daily with noise will have bum bearings or clutch.

dAz63 nailed it when he wrote about lugging. The ebikes.ca simulator tells part of the story. BBS02B 750W and BBSHD 750W have very similar specs. BBSHD can outpace the BBS02B, but riding the 02B like a bike makes it a useful motor. I just finished my folder Zizzo with a BBS01B 250W. It a very nice ride. Many of our BBSHD buyers are commercial users. Rail cars and Pedicabs. Most of the failures with BBSHD are clutches and rotor shafts. But the rotor shafts have been updated.

You are definitely overstressing the motor.
