That vice is an Irwin vice-grip for welding. Works great on fat tires. I also use a mini needle nose vice-grip on the valve stem to keep it fully extended while pumping.

It’s the rims that need to be slippery. The vice needs to be stable. When rimming the crotches (wether crotched or crotchless), they must be slippery to ensure proper installation. Wait, what are we talking about again.

I didn't intend to participate in this silly debate but let me ask a question: If you are not a competing rider, why would you ever consider hookless rims? Just to feel modern? Unless you invest in carbon tubeless rims, there's no need to go hookless.

I have a friend named Michael who works at a retail Mike's Bikes store. They have 18 locations with the goal of being the 'Starbucks of Bikes'. He contacted a carbon wheel manufacture in late 2021 with instant messaging to inquire about buying custom wheelsets. They asked him his name and for his companies' information. Now he gets rims that rival Roval & Reserve for about $135. They think he is the 'Mike' of Mike's Bikes! I might pull the trigger and go carbon crotchless. I would have another friend, Anthony, build the wheels. The project would be worthy of a expert wheel builder. I bribed him yesterday with a premium limited cab that has been in the cave for 11-years. Those wheels would be good for decades. Anthony has a Ti bike that is all White Industries. It is like jewelry. Mine are more practical.

I think you may have raised a good point. The decision to go crotchless or crotched would depend on your riding preference/style. If I’m in a tucked position, it would make sense, to me, that I would go crotchless. The other side, is that I may prefer crotch with an upright riding position.
I don’t know enough about hooks to know. It seems that if one didn’t want to be a hooker, they would go hookless. Unless they want to be a hooker, then you go with hooks.

You shop the rims for whatever it is you are looking for, and then at the end of that process decide if you are OK with hookless. If so click Add to Cart.
In my case I wanted the most load limit I could get, and a deep center channel. The Surly MYOBD rims I relied on at the time had no channel which made it effectively impossible to do roadside flat repair.
Hookless was a concern reading pages on the internet. Riding them, it turned out to be nothing.

@m@Robertson, I would like to call them beads but they are flat on tubeless tires. Anyway, that part of a tire that touches the rim has no give on tubeless only tires, so I can understand the advantages of a deeper channel. Makes sense.
Now I am tempted to watch that trashy drive-in '80's film with Carrie Fisher, & Robin Wright. I do not know who Goddess Bunny is. Sounds campy and with a lot of laughs.

oh yeah without it you can forget about removing the tire (without cutting it off). And putting them on is an epic of biblical proportions as you have to get the tire over the outer rim edge, which without a channel is even worse than getting the tire off it seems. For the Surly MYOBD rims, those are the only rims I have ever owned where I gave up and had my LBS mount tires on them. And they ruined two tires (snapped the no-stretch beads clean apart) on two different tries. They did get a set of non-tubeless Arisun Big Smoothies on and I don't know wtf I will do if I ever make the mistake of wearing those tires out. Those wheels are now my street-only wheelset and I am happy to stay the hell away from using them at all.
Since that experience, when rim shopping if some concavity or a center channel is not there, its an instant dealbreaker. A total must-have for tubeless and makes life easier regardless of the tire tech used.

Maybe you will need to do that solid scooter tire trick of heating them to 200 for 20 minutes and using both feet and two levers on a low stool with Dawn. Just have plenty of water on hand because you will be dripping. But I would not want to microwave highly conductive carbon fibers. That would be a Pointer Sister's song, I guess Springsteen too: Fire. Just think of that smell. I think a pasta pot of water could do the trick. Then you can chill add ice and lemon to drink the tire-tea as a bonus!

Given the nature of the bicycle market, I believe this is a choice that will eventually be taken away from us. A lot of the cycling industry is built around What is Cool for Racers and we normies get left with the, well leftovers. So if the cycling industry decrees that the Cool Kids will get hookless rims, then eventually nearly all of us who purchase higher-end bike gear will be forced to deal with them.
Consider how 1x drivetrains have become the thing and Shimano and SRAM won't even sell you a 2x or 3x. Even if for your application a 2x or 3x would be Appropriate Technology.

oh no guess again. I have already done this exact thing. Welll... everything but heat up the tire that is. Have to do it barefoot to get the right grip on the tire with your heel. And indoors so it can be on the carpet so you don't scarf up the rim. The Dawn on the last part of the bead was magic. One foot kept the tire coming back off the rim on the other side while the other foot applied persuasion to supplement my hands.
Thankfully those days are gone. BTW if you don't own one already, buy one of these. Not for use with Cushcore. Think of it as doing the job of a foot. Tubeless, tubed... doesn't matter just as useful for both.

I don't throw money away on tire gadgets because they are all crap. But this thing is the real deal. Makes almost impossible tires straightforward and normal tires a walk in the park.
