Good Morning. Im curious if any fellow Canadians have ordered a Bike from Ride1up... specifically if you had any difficulty with customs, or heavy taxes on import? Im interested in the 700... quite a bike for the money in the XR config

I had a customer bring a 500 across the border. He did not get charged any customs or taxes, but I think that's not usually the case.

I ordered a 700 last Wednesday, it was delivered on Monday, ~$30 GST charged. Assembled it in my dining room in a few hours, where it sits, waiting for the temperature to rise above -25C to try it out. :(

This is what concerns me a lot as well. I am in the market for an e-bike and the
700 series looks really cool. I live in Atlantic Canada and we do not have much of choice here in terms of the test rides. In fact I have never driven an e-bike so going only by the specs and availability I rounded up my choice between this and the Amigo Infinite. Please let me know what you guys think.

I searched the Canadian import regulations recently, since I've also ordered an ebike from the US. There is zero duty if the bike was built in any of the NAFTA counties. Even though the parts and frame are made in a non NAFTA country if the bike was built in the US there should not be any duty.

You can use this online tool to figure out duty and taxes: https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/dte-acl/est-cal-eng.html

I am also a Canadian living in Ottawa interested in buying a 700 series Ride1Up. The duty on bicycles HS Code (Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System) 8712 is 13 percent and is based on country of manufacture , in this case china.

The HST or provincial tax you pay would vary based on your province of residence.
Interestingly if you look up Canadian imports of products classed under HS code 871190 (87.11 Motorcycles (including mopeds) and cycles fitted with an auxiliary motor, with or without side-cars; side-cars 8711.90.00 00 -Other) you find that the largest importers in Canada in 2018 were companies such as Amego electric, Biktrix Enterprises, Epic cycles, Giant Canada, Trek Bicycle, Velec Inc. Voltbike Electric and other electric bike retailers. There is no Canadian duty on products from china labelled as HS 8711.90.00.00

I have purchased a lot of motorcycle parts over the years I had shipped to a warehouse in New York and drove over the border to pick up and have never been charged anything other than sales tax at the border. When the border reopens I will have a bike shipped to New York and see how it goes at the border. I suspect I won't have to pay more than HST. If you are having a bike shipped to Canada through the US byway of china you could try and get the retailer to label it as 871190.00.00 and see if it helps you avoid paying duty.

I'm getting my 700 tomorrow and I expect to pay my taxes but I will get back with the exact amount. I'm in Quebec (outside of Ottawa) so the taxes are a bit higher

Thanks for chiming in I am very interested in hearing about whether or not you have to pay the 13 percent duty. If you only have to pay sales tax I might get a bike shipped as well.

Got it today... I had to go pickup the bike at FedEx or wait forever.. because of covid 19. No duties, no taxes, nothing.
