Amsterdam bikes

Just left Amsterdam after a couple of days. Not sure if it's Amsterdam or all of the Netherlands, but I heard there are 850,000 bikes there. I can believe it's just Amsterdam. There are bikes everywhere!

I took a requisite canal tour where they said in a recent year they fished 18,000 bikes from the canals. 10 to 15,000 in a normal year. The canals are 10 meters, make that 3 meters (10 feet) deep, but one meter is mud and another meter is bikes.

Rode Amsterdam on a rented bike maybe 10 years ago. Couldn't get enough of it. In retrospect, glad I didn't become a canal statistic.

Bikes rule there — as they should. The cars and non-tourist pedestrians stay out of the clearly marked dedicated bikeways at a high level of compliance unthinkable in the US. Heaven!
