I'll be honest, I'm having a tough time mentally doing the surgery on this new Trek. But I'm convinced you DO need a quality bike under you with this kit. I don't think my Walmart bike will last long, plus I like to ride off road and XC, and if I'm careful I can always restore the Trek to it's original state.
