38-t chainring and smaller tires

FYI....
If you choose the Steps optional smaller 38-tooth chainring, and change tire sizes, the Steps software needs to be updated to maintain speedo/odo accuracy and to modify torque sensing. I'm not sure what happens when the chainring data is altered, so if anyone has done this please post a before and after ride experience.

Shimano's e-Tube software necessary to make those system changes does not show an access for the consumer or retailer to alter the numbers. I contacted Shimano and was told that the shop "will need to have a PCE-1 diagnostic tool as well as a PC and good internet connection". So, at this time it appears that the process can only be completed via a handshake with Shimano's tech support.

Update, July 9:
Visited a dealer back in May and they connected with support at Shimano USA who provided the proprietary pass code to change the settings for the 38t chainring, and my choice of narrower 26 x 1.50" tires. At the same time they updated the firmware. No problems with the changes, the Steps system continues to function flawlessly.

My previous pedal bike was a 24-speed with a 28-38-48 triple chainring. With the hills around here I used the 28t a lot. The Steps stock 44t chainring gearing with the eBike's 11-32 rear cluster was a bit tall and required power assist most of the time on long inclines, and always on moderate hills. With the new 38t chainring power assist is not needed as often, even when the panniers are heavily loaded, which conserves battery energy and greatly extends the range on a long ride.
