It still means that you can use PAS. I've never seen a bike that only has throttle. They always have throttle + PAS. Prefer the throttle though.

Im my experience go with wider fat tires that are also tubeless. Will not prevent anything to 100% of course but reduces the risk a lot!

Depends on the bike. Some have higher torque at lower speeds and vice versa.

HUB motors are heavier and have worse reliability, that's my take on this.

Geared provide more torque which is handy in my experience if you ride on sand. Some direct drive have regen braking which I've been looking into.
