No, It does not have to be left on the bike. I leave it on since both batteries discharge simultaneously during a ride. This forces both batteries to cycle all of the time so the ERB pack isn't sitting around with a full charge or partial charge.

Trek has a jig/fixture for aligning the battery to the mount points inside the frame and the lock mechanism. I would check if your LBS has this tool. You can search for the tool online to purchase, but if I remember they are expensive.

Not really. The 500W Battery is in the same housing as the 625W battery. So I wouldn't say it's not possible. We just don't know yet.

It would be a better deal for Trek to either include the 625watt battery or offer it as an upgrade when purchasing the bike. The 625w would be ideal for me as the 500w is a littler short of the distance I like to ride. So I had to spend close to $1000 to get the needed range.

I have the Range Boost and I would say that you would want to leave the Range Boost Battery on the bike all of the time. It is not convenient to remove. It requires the same key as the main battery. Since the bike is electric it the weight of the extra battery doesn't really effect performance...
