Show us pictures of where you ride your ebikes!

Any idea why that route was chosen, or by whom?
Many of the other roads in the Rancho Santa Fe area are like that bad stretch of Rancho Santa Fe Road, just nowhere near as busy. I think several of the group regulars and old-timers live in that area, and that's just what they're used to.

But the roads closer to my house are way safer, and that's what I'm used to.

Fair enough/understood.
In scouting out a route for my son to commute to a new work location I took a route that had us on a "way too busy" section. Thankfully it was short, but we both instantly knew it was never to be repeated.

Speaking of scouting possible routes, I really like to know the bike infrastructure situation in advance.

For anyone interested, the most reliable way I've found to scout infrastructure is to look for myself using satellite view in Google Maps, RideWithGPS, etc. Plenty of resolution to zoom in as needed. You can even see surface type, gates, etc.

At least here in coastal SoCal, it's rare to find places where the map imagery is out of date .

Guilty as well. :)

We had hail and thunderstorms yesterday. Today started off gray and damp in the mid thirties, but turned into this just in time for me to get out of work early and enjoy the afternoon.

Dealing with the new reality of whatever ails me lately. That said, got out for a couple of short rides this weekend. Such a gorgeous day today. Left wearing a short sleeve shirt, and a light sweater with fingerless gloves...

The pump track was a little busier today...

These boys were getting serious, and the coach was even more so. I'll call him "concerningly aggressive"...

The girls in blue were getting hammered by their own infield errors today...

When I headed home, I ditched the sweater. So nice!

New brakes day!
Some photos from a 12 mi test of my brand new brakes straight from the LBS in Encinitas. Normally avoid this area like the plague on Saturday mornings, but there are quite a few blocks with 12-16% grades within 3 mi of the shop.

So far, very pleased with this total all-Shimano upgrade. Details once the metallic pads are fully bedded.

First stop at the overlook above north Swami's Beach. Lots of steep descents to try around here, all encouraging that I hadn't wasted my money.

Below, a father and young son riding sloppy wet sand. The one and only time I rode sand that wet, got a slurry of sand and sea water all over my other bike's brakes. New pads and rotors required front and rear.

Next stop, Beacon's Beach, very popular with surfers young and old.

Now for some serious bike porn from the shop

Not sure what this extremely aero Van Rysel model is for, but it sure looks cutting-edge.

They still have one official replica of the yellow Colnago Tadej Pogacar used to win the 2024 TdF. Drool over this bike uncontrollably every time I go in.

Love the way those Enve deep-section wheels with white or yellow stickers look on TV at speed. My dream wheels! But I'll pass on these silver stickers. Note the divorce-level price.

Finally, a Specialized Levo 4 eMTB out front for rent at $125/day. I was an avid MTB rider 25-40 years ago but haven't been on one since. Getting a day on this one for my birthday.

The Van Rysel is a time trial bike, used for road time trials requiring UCI bikes, triathlons, or for posing on the PCH or the Swami's Ride.
Posing will be the main use around here. More rich old guys on superbikes than you can imagine on our roads.

That said, the 2-3 dozen I've ridden with on local group rides are significantly better climbers than I am, and some are even older!

I definitely need a motor to keep up on the bigger hills. They don't have motors, and I've done the math: The 5-10 kg of extra weight I'm carrying doesn't account for the difference. Many are sustaining well over 300W of rider power on 1-2 mi climbs.

Right you are! Cheaper than I thought.

Looks great for still air and headwinds. Wonder how it rides in a significant crosswind?

The most warm congratulations on your new brakes! I know the feeling when a really good thing is installed on one's e-bike! (I'm even jealous a bit, still, my Tektros serve me well under the conditions I ride).

1954 + 72 = 2026 :) The "C" models are fully made in Italy (Pogacar's Y1RS is not!) I've watched the programme on the C series: Tadej would not ride it but anyone else would be very happy!

Van Rysel
It is an interesting story. Van Rysel is the house brand for Decathlon. "Van Rysel" ware was perceived as something "decathloney" or simply: cheap (I think I still own some cheap VR cycling clothes). Now, with the TdF sponsorship, the prices of VR have skyrocketed!
Don't confuse with ENGWE :D

Please make your dream happen! Only... you might get disappointed a little. MTBs are not your regular bikes and crave for technical singletracks :)

Van Rysel is the in house brand of Decathlon. It's their highest range of road bikes and used by a number of pro teams, the WT Decathlon CMA team (With Paul Seixas - for now!) and also a Continental team called Van Rysel-Roubaix.

I'm not sure if you know Jeremy but under UCI rules all team bikes must be purchasable by the public (to keep it fair I guess?) Unlike say Formula One where you can't just rock up to your local Mercedes dealer on a whim and drive home an AMG F1 car! Which would be fun. There are price differences between teams but generally they are all well under £20K - Pog's Colnago listed at $16K one of the pricer bikes. I like this about the sport.
