Got myself out of the house this afternoon by promising a leisurely Coast Highway ride south to Swami's Beach and back. And I kept the promise in all but 2 places: (1) a southbound construction zone that I always try to blast through, and (2) pretty much the whole way home.
First photo stop, just short of the south turnaround, was the J Street overlook above north Swami's Beach. The sun came out between these shots.
The unusual geometry of this place always triggers the same sci-fi fantasy: The concrete lines converge on a drain that's really a portal to the 11th dimension. Might have something to do with mystical emanations from the
Self-Realization Fellowship Temple a block away.
Maybe if I park over the portal, I can pick up some charge.
;^}
The other stop was to check on the status of the sea cliff stabilization project at Grandview Beach, where a family of 8 was killed in a fiercely litigated cliff failure ca. 2018. The project closed this beach stairway for over a year. Good to see it open again.
Now about that promise
Attacked the flat mile of construction in SPORT (55/70) and with the help of a 5-10 mph tailwind was soon up to 26-27 mph. That was ~250W from me and another 170W or so from the motor for a total of ~420W.
And just as I was congratulating myself on this speed on the flat, a 20- or 30-something roadie whizzed right past me!! Didn't get a great look at him but saw no sign of either heavy breathing or a battery or motor. Dang!
So naturally, I tried to catch him in TURBO (80/100) at well over 500W total. And when I finally threw in the towel about a mile later, he was still pulling away. Oh well.
Back to leisurely after that, as promised. But a case of the zoomies (construction zone after-effect?) set in soon after the turnaround and took me home in (for me in ECO) record time.
