2025 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

I was referencing a recent post where I mentioned getting asked to leave a church. Actually I had stopped at that one for 30 years on my rides…sitting at a picnic table for a rest, sometimes going inside for water Until one Sunday an angry young woman sitting, unbeknownst to me, in a darkened SUV poked her head out and started yelling at me that I couldn’t be there because “you ain’t in the congregation” which she knew from my complexion. I do help out one church in the area from time to time but am not a member.

I’m sitting here drinking coffee after my ride listening to the classic rock station on Roku. Cloudy with a north breeze but about 52f so not bad. I rode 17 miles and had a little more elevation gain of 500 feet. A picture I took of an Amish horse team hitched up and tied to a post ready to work. I’m guessing the owner was eating lunch when I rode by. The one closest to me kept eyeballing me like I appeared to be a sketchy character.

After a few days of rain, headed out for an hour ride nearby.
It wasn't a long ride, so I only took these photos at my turnaround point on the north end of the route. I know this trail is closed to bikes, but I walked in a bit to capture the photo of the trees. I love the vibe after the rain. Huddart Park, Woodside.
Can't see photos.

I remember trails like that from my Bay Area days, especially in Marin. Beautiful! Definitely a different (well-watered) vibe than the one you get on the trails here in semi-arid coastal SoCal.

I live in San Mateo County...of all the counties in the Bay Area, it has the least amount of bike access on the trails, compared to nearby counties, though it has hundreds of miles of trails, as it is hiker and equestrian biased. That said, NO dirt trails in SMCounty allow e-bikes, of any type – access is limited to the paved trails which are shared with walkers, hikers, etc. In SMCounty, I ride my traditional MTBs on all of the trails that do allow bikes, but also travel to Santa Clara, Sonoma, Marin...

I've been feeling unwell since Monday last week. Only had a chance to see a doctor on last Monday. She told me the infection had combined with my tendency to asthma. Got proper meds and feel better. My gf gave me a ban on long rides during the cold season... and she's right! Unfortunately, it means I might not be able to make my minimum 5,000 miles ridden this year! Oh, no...

Your health is much more important than any miles, Stefan! I'm glad your meds are working and I hope that continues!

I still need to do my short utility rides. The actual temperature is -1°C. A Garmin would display +4°C. How come such big companies cannot acquire proper thermometers or just calibrate them?!

Fresh here as well, 5 degress C
@Brix who is a Londoner wrote me: "It blows the frost!"
While South England is a generally warm area (palm trees, parrots, flowers in the Winter...) it becomes a nasty place when it is really cold! In January 2017 I flew in Luton. As soon as I left the airport, I felt it was really cold! So I first opened my suitcase and produced a warm cardigan. Then I put the suitcase upright and hanged my woollen cloak on the handle. Then, IT BLEW! My suitcase fell, and the cloak went into a muddy puddle :D Oh, London can be so cold at times!

But you will be around to try in 2026

Not so fast. Before you give up on your 5,000 mi goal, check the evidence on a causal relationship between cold exposure and respiratory illness. Last I checked, it was still unsubstantiated, and not for lack of studies. Spurious seasonal correlation between them, yes, causation no.

Why give up something important to you on such shaky grounds?

Jeremy, thank you for your kind and wise words. I need to get my respiratory tracts clear first for sure. Then I might make my goal in December.

The year was not the best for me with February lost to cure my first infection in years!

Hope you feel better soon! You don't need long rides to make your goal, but regular/daily shorter rides can add up quick.

Stefan, Best wishes for a speedy recovery. I hope you can get back to your explorations soon.
