You pay US$250 or more for the Garbaruk cassette which is far more superior than Shimano or SRAM are. Besides... where does the American company SRAM make their drivetrains? In China, perhaps?

What is worrying me is Bafang is manufactured in Wrocław Poland for the EU market.

In that case - I've got a polish part on my specialized!

I own a handmade in Poland bike. It is a Crème. The only place that sells them in North America has one location in Montreal and another in Vancouver. They want $900 C for a basic three speed with a coaster brake. I made mine electric. Actually this is my second one. It now has gravel tires and it is a blast to take off road.

Actually, these guys are Ukrainian . They established the manufacturing in Poland to be inside the EU market, and as it turned out later it has saved them from the war.

Mr Garbaruk senior has gained enormous knowledge in metallurgy while his son is an apt businessman.

The Garbaruk plant is located in Cracow Nowa Huta, nearby big steelworks.

Two blocks North is White Industries in Petaluma, CA. Good wheels can set you back two-grand. This stuff is like fine jewelry and is meant to last. The people who really know appreciate it and are willing to wait in line for it. It is not 2-buck Chuck. The good stuff is worth it. But it is not for everyone. Some are good with the cheap stuff and that is okay too.

As you say... they are not for everyone. I'd argue that they are for the few that compete professionally and those with more money then mental ability as the average bike owner would never come close to actually appreciating any difference.
Two buck Chuck is like having to roll your bicycle backwards each time you start it or removing the speed sensor to get it to operate properly.... and that's OK too

Bicycles are in town transportation for me. I have access to things that excite me far more than bikes of any kind that I'd rather spend money. Chainsaws being one of them. I can also get an Arsenal AK, and 1,000rds of ammo for under $3,000. Ditto for a Benelli M4 shotgun.

You are free to own and ride a cheap ebike. It sounds like it suits your purpose.

Others, including myself have purposes that require greater range, better handling, lighter weight, good brakes, a good range of gears, decent build quality and basically a better bike.

It seems that you are looking at e-bikes through a narrow lens.

An AK with 1000 rounds is something that is of no value to most, but seems worthwhile to you. But if that is what you feel you need, scary as that is with your handle being @PsychoBilly, then you probably understand the downside of trying to achieve the same goal on a $1000 budget. For my needs, $1 would be too much.
