Installed a Rohloff Speedhub 14, IGH on my mid-drive Luna Z1 Ultra Mag

4/27/23 - Last Installation piece, The Chain Guide
Haven't done that yet. I never had one when I was running a derailleur system, I did lose the chain every now and then when my rear suspension was bounced hard at speed. I will ride it for a few days to see how it performs without. I will install it in about a week. Not quite as simple on the carbon fiber frame as with an aluminum frame.

I rode a friend's Luna Apex with Rohloff some years back. It didn't have the Chain Guide, but it did have a derailleur! I asked about why it still had a derailleur when it had only one cog in the back and the owner said it was to have tension on the chain so it didn't fall off during hard suspension changes. It looked silly to me, but it apparently worked.

By chance, did you measure your wife's cc for the rohloff, or did you not have the bike when you had the measuring kit? With what knowledge you have, do you think the CC can accept a rohloff?

I did not measure her dropouts. The CC is a thru-axle so it would need to be measured. It will certainly accept the Rohloff, just need to know which adapters/sleeves would be needed.

Thats' strange. Perhaps Rohloff did not have a chain tensioner back then.

Looking at Luna's site now I came across this photo:

Maybe what I thought was a derailleur was the actual tensioner?

I've ridden my bike with the Rohloff hub now many hours/miles. Yesterday I took it out on some rugged MTB trails for a few hours. Lots of rocks, roots, hills, etc. It performed far better than I would have hoped for. The uphill gearing is perfect, and the benefit of being able to access any gear instantly is nice when you get stopped on a hill and need to shift a few gears and restart your uphill climb. The hub operates super smooth, and takes the power of the Bafang Ultra Mag in stride. The aesthetic feeling of the finely manufactured hub gearing is very different from my old system. The whole operation seems smoother and more efficient than the cog/derailleur system. I am very impressed, at least in the short run. Shifting under load is not problem. The process is now subconscious and very fast. The hub is a real pleasure to drive.

OP gday.
My buddy just picked up his Rohloff kit (similar to yours) and swung by my house so we could scope it out.
We ordered a Sun Ringle Duroc 50 27.5” and like you are going with the 2 cross pattern for the lacing.
In fact I just ordered the spokes (Saipan straight gauge (252mm) and brass nipples from Wheelbuilder Pro.
I think he’s going with an Eddy Current tires on the rear as he’s rolling with a 29’r the same on the front.

Once the rim and spokes show up, probably next week sometime, I can build up the wheel and then the fun will start.

If it’s OK with you I’ll post up some pics as we go to show any differences in install for others to consider.
If you would rather me start a separate thread please say so I don’t want to cramp your hard work in any way.

More Rohloff porn is welcome. I for one would like to see another build like Tom did and speaking for myself, would like to see a new post. It will be easier to follow as your experience may be different. But that is me. And please document it. I plan on trying to do the same towards the end of the year.

I would agree with kiethj69, more Rohloff porn is welcome! Certainly you are welcome to post your build here, but if you create a separate thread it would be easier to follow, especially for somebody that stumbles upon the post many months or years from now. I did my original post in this way to make it easier for others to follow and glean info later on. Post away, it will be interesting to watch your build and learn from you also. Looking forward to seeing the updates.

Now thinking about it Im not sure Eric ( Luna) would want another bike manufacturer's ( Exess) build up of the Rohloff on his property so to speak.

Maybe I could drop in the Bafang section.

We purchased the frames and motors from WW a couple years back so Im not sure if that's a good fit.

Decisions decisions. Probably Bafang.
