Will 20$/ barrel oil, 1$ /gallon stop people from buying an ebike ?

A lot price wars now in the oil industry and as a result we will very soon have very low prices for gas. More F-150's and SUV on the road. Good for the economy and very destructive for the climate ?

It will affect some people for sure, but commuting by bike vs. car has multiple cost elements. Fuel is a significant one, but others such as parking, R&M, insurance, etc … aren't related to the price of oil, or if they are it's pretty indirect.

If I was going to get a cargo bike to replace a car the drop in oil prices wouldn't matter too much to me.

Why do some people put the dollar sign after the numbers?

In North America the only area I know of where this is typical is Quebec Province in Canada. But there are many cultures/countries where the currency symbol comes after the number so it's not uncommon to see that usage especially on the internet.

well, a recent industry event now has a full blown oil price war going on that may bring oil as low as 10/barrel.

It is foreign competition driving oil prices down. The US being oil independent is due to shale oil. Shale oil is more expensive to refine. Shale oil is is produced and refined when oil prices are over 50 or 60 dollars per barrel. OPEC and others are trying to keep prices low because selling a barrel of oil for $45 a barrel is better then not selling any at all. We buy oil when prices are low, we produce oil when prices are higher. OPEC has every incentive to keep prices low.

For them around 45-50$ it would be okay, but It didn't went according to the plan with the production cuts meeting on Friday. The Saudis now are producing at an unlimited rate to squeeze their ex. oil ally-Russia.

That will bring the prices very, very low , b/c there is at least 25-30% less usage in the airline industry due to the virus. Also not many people are going on a cruise ships for that same similar reason. They use a lot of oil products.
Us shale oil will get a very strong squeeze also due to the very low oil prices. Many will close down.

It is now @31$.

I was raised in Europe, and my 3rd language (english) was thought with a very strong Uk influence. But i hardly remember if the $ sign after the number was part of the learning class.
It's just logical imo to put it at the end b/c in a conversation we say :

Ex:

- The Creo costs 8.000 dollars;

Not :

- the Creo cost dollars 8.000😉

I doubt low oil prices will put off those wanting to use their commute as an opportunity to fit in exercise, and combined with the current international travel restrictions will encourage folks to take driving and/or outdoor vacations

I didn't purchase my ebike for gasoline savings, 2 years ago... (Though I hoped when I bought it, I would end up commuting to work on it eventually -- which I have, 222 times since then -- but that wasn't one of the top "purchase reasons" for me.) I've been driving a hybrid car for 10 years though, so my gasoline costs have been low, relative to my prior cars, for a long time.
I know some folks buy an ebike to move to a car-free/gas-free diet, but plenty more (like me) aren't basing the purchase on that factor. My principal motivator in the purchase was to regain regular exercise.

I suspect you are closer to the norm than the one who would see a drop in gas prices and not buy a cargo bike. Way closer to the norm.

I get all that, and I understand the internationality of this forum but when you're talking about USD the dollar sign goes in front. Has for hundreds of years.

As for a UK influence, where does the £ go for GBP? Or the € for EUR (in the UK), for that matter?

TT

That is the result of both Saudi Arabia and Russia pushing prices lower. One reason for them to push prices lower is to drive our shale oil producers out of business. Creditors over the past 3 days are starting to panic some of these producers may file for bankruptcy protection. Our government is now supposed to be working on it. Who knows. This is a big deal, it could easily cause a recession when combined with the virus issues. It's a case of who can lose money the longest wins. Wins the short game at least.
