I am sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, can I put 41/2" tires on my adventure and if so do I need new rims?Thank you ahead for any info!

You don't need new rims. Measure the clearance width of the frame and front fork to see if they will accommodate the width of the tire including the tread nubs. I Put 4.5" Kenda Juggernauts on my Fat bike and the tread nubs rubbed on the frame in the rear and I had to trim each nub down with a razor.
