What sized winter tires for Trek Allant+ 8S (27.5" x 2.4" tires currently)

Hi Folks,

I recently bought a Trek Allant+ 8s that I will be using for bike commuting (about 23 to 26 miles round trip depending on which route I take). The bike has Alex MD35 27.5" rims and currently is equipped with 27.5" x 2.4" tires.

I would like to order some winter studded tires and was thinking about some Schwalbe or similar tires for winter commuting (I live in NH).

What size tire should I get? would a narrower tire (< 2.4" ) fit on the rim?

The Schwalbe website lists a winter tire that is 27.5" x 2.2". Would that be OK for my rims?

Thanks in advance!

Where would you ride in winter? On paved roads? Dirt roads? Snowmobile trails, aka rail trails around here? I'm in SW NH right by Mt. Monadnock.

I ask because around here, the places I ride now in summer are the same ones I'd ride in winter, and the roads get cleared pretty promptly.

Mostly just the city and suburban roads. I'm just paranoid about hitting a patch of ice (which I have done in the past) and have read that marathons are good brands for winter commuting.

I live outside of Manchester and will be commuting into Manchester.
