What ebike models can I select to have a Passenger? I am from Canada...

Hello there Guys;
So I have a toddler baby of 18 months and I am thinking about possible options to take him on ebike rides; What should I look for when searching for this option?

My wife can also join me at times; So, what product has enough power and storage capacity to add a second passenger?

Tern GSD has a long enough deck to accommodate a Yepp child seat and a pillion passenger, low center of gravity too which helps when balancing 3 people on two wheels.

How long will your ride be with the wife on back? Many of the minibike looking models have a passenger seat, but my wife would not want to sit on that little bit of foam for 10 miles. Enough power is a tough answer. If all your ride is on flat pavement, it's a lot different than gravel hills. Storage capacity for a second passenger starts to sound like you are a mass murderer. Most passengers don't want to be in a storage area! LOL

I also suggest a Workcycles FR8 from J C Lind in Chicago, and convert it with a BBS02 or TSDZ2 mid-drive motor.

I suggest you cruise through this category - cargo bikes: https://electricbikereview.com/forums/forum/cargo/
People that don't own one seem to love the tern GSD. Personally I find the ride of 20" wheels to be tooth jarring. Our pavement is not perfect in Indiana. I ride the 26" wheel model left, a yubabikes bodaboda, which has foot platforms in addition to a rear shelf suitable for 2 child seats. For older children they have a padded shelf accessory, and a hand grip that attaches to the seat post. There are mounts in the frame for a front basket which does not turn with the wheel, which is convenient for a diaper bag or other child accessories or even groceries. You see in the picture I mounted my battery there. Other vendors of note include xtracycle, kona ute, magnum (has dealers) and M2s. I found the speeds and battery size available in the pre-electrified models inadequate, and bought a 24 speed bodaboda and later added a front hub motor from ebikeling.
Another option is buying a bicycle built for two, and adding a hub motor to it. Nobody is selling these with electricity to my knowledge. Perhaps it is because the selection of low power motors available due to the laws of certain states & countries(CAN,AUS,EU). My geared hub motor is 48 v 1300 W, which seems to be no longer available in the US. People that ride these up 1000' in 30 minutes burn the motors up. I imagine that motor is still for sale in china. Be sure to buy a bicycle for two with a 7 speed rear sprocket cluster, as nobody is selling a hub motor compatible with 5 speed chain, which is wider.

In addition to the Tern GSD mentioned above, there is the Tern HSD which is cheaper and has less hauling capacity (a passenger weighing no more than 135 lbs.). I own the Tern HSD and my only reservation is that its Bosh-motor climbing ability is not as good as my Yamaha-motor Haibike mountain ebike. And yes, I agree with @indianajo that the 20-inch wheels of the HSD make for a more nervous ride than the 27.5-inch wheels of my Haibike.

Court Rye (the owner of this website) reviewed both the Tern GSD and Tern HSD.

If you need to carry two passengers, there is the Surly Big Easy, a long-tail, steel-frame electric cargo bike. (Personally, I favor the riding characteristics of steel, a combination of suppleness and strength that aluminum lacks.) Surly's promotional video shows a man cycling easily with two elementary-school-age kids on the back. The Big Easy has 26-inch wheels and 2.5-inch wide tires, much better riding than the Tern's 20-inch wheels by 2.15-inch wide tires. It might be possible to carry a small adult (i.e. less than 150 lbs.) plus a toddler in a Yepp child seat, but it would be better to ask Surly.
