weather forecast

Like a hatchet. If she can pull the tops off of cans? That is a momma bear. They can pull the door off a Toyota to eat goldfish off the baby seat.

Currently 53F and sunny. Had a chance to go on a grocery run before the bomb cyclone hits. Took the long way. Grocery store runs can be either 2 or 4 miles. Too nice to take shortcuts today.

We will get the brunt on Saturday. The storm is spinning counter clockwise and got mashed and stalled along the west coast as it slowly moves east. That spin means that on the right side the wind is from the south. That is what we have today, Saturday we will get the back side with winds from the north and over one inch per hour.

Coastal San Diego County got a temporary reprieve from the storm yesterday -- enough to see some blue sky, go to the beach, and get in 9 mi on the bike last night.

Light to moderate rain started up again late last night and continues this morning, but the foretold winds have yet to show up. Nothing, however, like the continuing deluge to our north.

Headed back to the beach by car now to watch the big storm waves predicted for today. These infrequent but powerful waves are the main factors shaping our sea cliffs and shifting the sand around from beach to beach.

Yikes, 40 mph sleet! That'll suck the heat out of you.

Today's storm wave watching started out gray and bracing. But it felt great to be just above the beach, gusting wind in face, watching and listening to the pounding surf. Whitecaps to the horizon. Such a dynamic place!

An hour later, the sun broke through, and the wind slowed to a breeze. It was better the first way.

I was just out watching our river. The upper Petaluma River is at 9.5 feet. I predict that at high tide, 5AM Wednesday it will go over its banks. It is going to take out a large homeless encampment on the banks. The water looks angry. White foam is on the mocha rushing water. We are expecting major rains with 50 mph winds after midnight for two days. Those people are living in tens in a mud pit. Just NW of here another river, the Russian, is already flooding the town of Guerneville. Entire vineyards are currently flooded, a dozen roads were closed today and some schools. Let's hope the forecasts are wrong.

The forecast was wrong, it barely rained in the last 24 hours. I was out in a full rain suit and was more damp inside than out.

Lets hope Bohemian Grove is safe ;)

Glad you've been spared. I've been worrying about family in Sacramento, the East Bay, and Carmel Heights.

Here in coastal San Diego County, the ongoing string of Pacific storms has brought mostly light to moderate rain and wind (including today), and last Friday, some damaging surf. But nothing like you've been getting.

Hope the Petaluma River isn't threatening your shop and home.

Petaluma River
I will post a photo later today. Remember when there were nine planets? Then there weren't. That is sort of like the Petaluma River. It is really a tidal slough. But by act of Congress it was designated a 'river-in-law.' Thanks for thinking of me. I will be fine. I am worried about the least of these, sleeping under bridges. There is a reason houses are not built where there is a four acre encampment.

The rain has been just a little drizzle. Not at all what was predicted. The river dropped by 4'6" in 24 hours.

Just heard that some meteorologists are now referring to this unusual NE Pacific weather event as a "parade of cyclones". I like it. "Cavalcade of cyclones" is even better.

An AWFUL winter. Temperatures are well above normal but RAIN! Rain in Minnesnowta in January means ICE. In snowy winters the snow gets plowed aside and the sun usually melts off the remnants in a week or so. This year because of glare ice and frozen slush even more salt and sand have been already put down than through an entire typical winter. Still have half of January, February, and March to go... DEFINITELY cabin fever winter this year. Something I've not experienced in decades. WALKING outdoors on ice is terrifying. In my "yoot" I worked as a medical assistant/orderly and wiped a lot of oldsters' butts with busted hips from winter falls. NO, just, NO!
