I've had my Elby now for three months and thought a followup might be helpful for folks. My initial thinking has only been solidified by my experience.
There are several things that put the Elby at the top of any list of recommended e-bikes.
- It's purpose built so that everything is smoothly integrated into a beautiful package. Almost all cables and wiring are enclosed protected from the weather and getting snagged on obstacles. The integrated control system functions smoothly and perfectly and it provides the rider with a wide variety of information.
- It's superior BionX motor is unique in design delivering super-powerful performance while being stealthily quiet (you will be astounded at how quietly it operates and learn to use the built-in bell frequently so you don't surprise folks). It handles the steep hills around my house in the Oakland Hills and on the trails like a champ and doesn't have the whine or noise I've come to associate with other e-bikes. This is a big deal for me.
- It's battery has great capacity which coupled with the BionX motor gives it great range.
- It's well balanced and easy to ride with little flex and great directional stability. It corners like a champ.
- Assembly is a snap and took me less than five minutes.
You can use it like a moped and completely rely on the electric motor to get you up to speed... or choose one of a variety of assist levels to get the exercise you desire.
It's setup makes it easy to charge the battery either on or off the bike.
The built in rack supports on the back frame are perfect for holding panniers (I suggest the Ibera Bicycle Bag PakRak Clip-On Quick-Release All Weather Bike Panniers (Pair), Includes Rain Cover.)
It's hydraulic brakes are amazingly strong and functional compared to traditional bike brakes. This is also a big deal for me.
All in all, while it is not the cheapest of e-bikes, it is the best IMHO!
Cons-
- cost
- weight (it comes in at about 57 pounds) so you can't use a standard strap-on bike rack (I suggest the Saris Freedom EX 2-Bicycle Universal Hitch Rack.)
