It may sound really simplistic, but the addition of the motor/battery really opens the door for all kinds of designs that can be pedaled, coming in many different form factors, shapes, styles, even weights. Bicycles without motor assist, really have been limited to a strong degree by the weight, and aerodynamics. Hence why so many look so alike for so long.
I suspect this is going to be an exciting industry for decades to come, for all sorts of personal mobility, and expressions of individualism along with stylistic innovation unlike we have ever seen. Bigger, longer, very small, very portable, 3 wheels, 4 wheels, virtually every shape and size, including what might have been considered totally impractical only a few short years ago. Super fat tires, super small tires, mega slicks, you name it. Extreme comfort vehicles, or multiple passengers that go beyond just the traditional 'tandems.' The combinations are endless. Even previously unthinkable bike trailers/"campers." And way cheaper than automobiles for the most part, as a LOT can be done for $5000 to $10000 that certainly isn't being done now. Not yet anyway. Lets hope more OEMs come on board, and get away from the staid designs of the big players in bikes.
And from a marketing perspective, I had some great fun this year helping a firm put together an awesome looking retro cafe style ebike, that was able to pull a client's beverage product in a custom designed trailer that contained a LOT of ice, at LiveNation Concerts this year. Without the assist, it would have been otherwise totally impractical and not feasible with a regular bike.
Here's to an even more exciting 2019 !
