My neighbor bought an electric trike that quickly developed problems, the wiring was bad with bare wires shorting and sparking.

I fixed that the bike ran sometimes but not others, it turns out the switch on the controller has a low and probably insufficient watt rating and it stopped working unless you wiggled it and the controller died soon after.

We want to replace the controller, throttle and battery charge display, since the motor and batteries work great. ebikekit said the motor is a direct drive. It's got 36V to run on.

I can't find details on how to wire the controllers. We don't need PAS, headlight, taillight, or regenerative braking, we just want to drive with a throttle. I'm hoping people can steer me to a kit and tell me what to do with the unneeded wiring.

Sometimes its best to do an intro post first, then a request for information. eBay and Alibaba have kits, controllers, displays and battery packs. I have seen controller, display bundles under $100 pretty often, although I have not checked of late.

Thanks, I don't know much about this, the motor has 3 wires, and I don't know the wattage of the controller to buy. Also what do I do with the unused wires, just leave them disconnected? Are you aware of any online tutorials about this stuff? Thanks!

Yeah, a member here, Micah. He is on YouTube. eBike school. He also has some books. I find him easy to follow.

It may be better to look at a new motor kit rather than try to repair an old motor with lead-acid batteries... here are a few reviews from EBR.

I'm sorry I wasn't clear, the motor and battery work great, the cotroller died.

My neighbor bought an electric trike that quickly developed problems, the owner had replaced the battery with 3 12V batteries carried in the back basket, but his wiring was terrible, he was trying to run it on 12V (wiring the batteries in parallel for current gain instead of in series for voltage gain) and he had bare wires so sparking was happening! After I fixed that the bike ran sometimes but not others, it turns out the switch on the controller has a low and probably insufficient watt rating and it stopped working unless you wiggled it, probably carbon buildup on the contacts. We decided to put in a switch on the battery cable and remove the switch on the controller and short across it, but the controller died soon after. So now we want to replace the controller, throttle and battery charge display, since the motor and batteries work great. I had to email ebikekit several times to get them to tell me what the motor was since there are no identifying part numbers or specs on it or on their web site, it appears they do this on purpose to encourage people to pay them for everything. They want $350 for a controller, throttle and display which seems a bit high. So I am going to ask for help here in selecting a controller, throttle and display. They' should total $100 or less on ebay, amazon, or alibaba. I was an electronics tech but I can't find details on how to wire the controllers. We don't need PAS, headlight, taillight, or regenerative braking, we just want to drive with a throttle. So I'm hoping people can steer me to a kit and tell me what to do with the unneeded wiring, e.g. if I don't use PAS do I have to jumper anything on the motherboard or can I just ignore those wires? Judging by the quality of help I've seen in several of the forums here I think we're in good hands.

Hello mscir, Welcome to the Forum. If there's help to be found or at least a good suggestion it will pop up on EBR. For old folks like me
and maybe some younger folks as well, could you break up your initial question/comment into several paragraphs. One huge word dump :)
it a bit difficult to read. Thanks a bunch.

John

Thanks John, I summarized and used multiple paragraphs, I hope it's more readable now. Thanks.

Excellent Job, I did't mean you needed to summarize, but that's ok. What you have to say is important. Hopefully
some folks will be able to offer help. I have no knowledge of E-Bike Kits.
Good luck,
John
